Most tranny work can be done in the frame, in fact I can't think of any reason for having to pull the tranny. I've always done my own work so I can't give a guestamit on shop cost but I do know I can be as far as getting to the big main seal in about 40 minutes and that includes loosening off starter bolts and
Removing left floor board. If I were to pull the gearset I would need to remove right side exhaust and floor board , right saddle bag and right tranny cover and then loosen off trap door and that would be about another 40 minutes or less, after that it's just a matter of pulling the
Tranny top cover , selector drum and forks and
Tap out the gear set, 20 minutes. After that it's what ever they do with what is needed.
So saying all that, why do you need tranny work?
6-8 hours is about right for a full rebuild on most Evo/TC 5 speed trannys....more or less depending on what is actually being done....remember that is "shop time" so includes test riding it afterwards and cleaning the grubby fingerprints off.
It won't shift. All I have left is 1st and neutral.

Is the shifter arm off the tranny stiff with spring back tension going
Forward and to the rear? Could be number of small issues.
Pull the top tranny cover off and take a look, it may be as simple as a bent shift fork.
What yr and model?

Obviously it would depend on how far the tech needs to go to find the problem and how competent he is. Mechanics can charge "book time" or "time and materials". Usually they charge which ever is the longest as most are in business to make money. If it's the shifter pawl spring (which would be my first guess), then the tranny needs to have the gearset completly pulled. If the shifter pawl is just out of adjustment then the whole deal of diagnosing and adjustment should be under two hours max, plus a gasket.

You can get the shifter arm assy out without removing the gear set or opening the primary, I have done it a couple of times....you won't find it in the manual but its easy enough to do.
