What was done to the motor? I just read this thread and it didn't pop out at me if it's in here..
Sounds to me like timing... It would make sense if you are getting spark, fuel, and it has compression, but it isn't getting them all at the right time. Get it? That's what used to happen to me on the cars I would restore.

Took the top end apart to fix a leaky base gasket.
The starter spinning I doubt is your clutch. You could remove your clutch plates and it would still turn the engine over, it just wouldn't engage the tranny. That's a new concern. I can't think of anything you've done that could be doing this, except those plug wires. Your single fire ignition is something I don't completely understand, but it sure sounds like timing, since spark and fuel are both there. Timing would explain the little umph you get now and then. All this cranking, have you ever flooded it? Just thinking.....
