No, I don't have anything to check the compression with.

If this system started before you worked on the cables, then I would look for something else. If it is rich, then it is getting too much fuel. If you did not play with the carb, then my guess would be debris in the float needle preventing it from seating completely or at least a "sticky" float needle.

Are you sure you put the correct cables back in the correct positions? Not sure if that would make a difference, but just checking anyways. YD

It was running fine prior to replacing the cables, and the cables are in the correct position, but I did have to adjust the play when I put the new grip on. they appeared correct when I put everything back together on the handlebar. I also tightened down the choke cable at the same the time because it was slipping.

Sounds exactly like your low speed needle is clogged. Give the cleaner a chance to work. That or you could disassemble your carb and clean it.

Drain the carb bowl, catch the fuel and see if there's any water.

I don't understand what you mean by the choke cable was slipping.
The enrichener for the CV carburetor can be the source of an overly rich mixture.
Is it possible you have done something that is keeping the enrichener in service?

Slipping, meaning when the enricher was pulled out when starting, it would slide back into it's non-enriching position in a short amount of time due to the vibration of the motor. This would make the engine rpm drop, the engine would stutter, and I'd have to pull the enricher back out. The process would repeat. So, I tightened the nut on the enricher **** to keep it from doing that.

Oh, I see.
You know you need to take it easy tightening that nut that holds the enrichener **** assy. in place, it just plastic, breaks easily and the dealers love selling new ones for a lot of dough.
Good luck finding the problem.
