I put slip-ons onto my 07 Street Bob and the dealer told me that I need to do the remap and add a higher flow AC which I did and it has run just fine (maybe a little crackling in the decel). I just bought an 09 Deluxe and I am going to put V&H slip-ons on it as well (I love the sound, the look, and the price!). I am by no means even close to knowing anything about mechanics and I was wondering what everyone thought. Should I do the remap and the AC again or is that not necessary? It just seems to me that if I didn't change the AC then I should be OK. I could be completely wrong but I wanted some opinions.
The only thing that I have purchased is the slip ons so I am glad I came here for opinions. Saved me a few hundred bucks that I can put to something else! That pi55es me off that they take advantage of people like that! Oh well lesson learned on the '07 Bob.
They're not trying to take advantage of you at all, most parts guys and service writers really have no idea what a download even does other than they are instructed that it is needed when selling exhaust. Before 09 the downloads did actually richen the fuel. If you don't use a tuning device of some sort on the newer bikes keep an eye on the muffler inlet, eventually it'll turn yellow. Most slip-on mufflers are compatible with the stock calibration, meaning that the bike will still be able to run at the factory air-fuel ratio, but it's so lean that any unshielded muffler will turn colors.
If you bought the slipons for looks or sound then no, you didn't need the ac. If you did it for performance then you really need the ac. If you're looking for performance it was good advice.
You might as well ride it and see how you feel about the performance. Personally, I found performance just a little lacking with just the slipons. There were occasions that I had the throttle wide open urging it to go faster passing and such. The 10%-15% gain I got from changing the ac eliminated that for me. Sure, there's always times I would like even more, but from a practical perspective I feel I now have all I really need where before it felt a little lacking.
Thanks for the advice guys. So, by just putting on the slip-ons without doing anything else shouldn't hurt my motor correct?
If it pings too often, you will eventually hurt your motor. If it is just a little pinging when you are really getting on it, you'll be ok.
Eventually, you may wish to do something to richen it up a little, IED's, XIED's, or a fuel management system (Power Commander, Race Tuner, a number of others..). You should be fine with just the slip-ons though.
