Found this in my rear tire this morning during pre-ride inspection:
All but the last 3/8 of an inch was buried in my tire, which (amazingly, to me at least) was still holding air.
Last ride was uneventful, so I'm scratching my head trying to figure out just how this could have happened (it was well to the outside of center, so I suppose I picked it up in a turn).
Glad the tire held up for the duration of the ride, though. Man!
Every time I see wood, wood pieces or splinters, I think NAILS! At least you found it before you went out, where the tire went flat and no place to fix it.
I was lucky, for sure...never saw any wood or splinters, though. Been wracking my brain, trying to figure out where I might have picked it up. I suppose close to the end of my ride is likely.
Doing a pre ride inspection can make a big difference. I would say that enormous nail is more than enough proof of that. Glad to hear you found it in there before it caused any havoc!
That nail was lying harmlessly on the road until the front tire stood it up and rear tire sucked it in.
Nails are pretty good at plugging holes they make. At most you get a slow leak...until you pull the nail out.
Check this one out. And it was on a brand new tire. Luckily, I had tire and wheel coverage. And this tire never went down either. Sure chewed up the inside edge of the drive belt though. But dealer never replaced it, or showed any concern over it.
