As strange as this may sound (advice, by the way, from this forum) I use a penny (a softer metal than chrome) on my chrome to scrape off my melted boot from my mufflers and heat shields. Haven't had a problem yet.

Easy-Off oven cleaner on warmed pipes. Wipe with a clean white cloth towel. Be careful not to get any oven cleaner on painted surfaces. I have used this method for melted boots, my father's melted pants and a plastic bag that blew onto them while I was sitting at a stoplight.

Once you get the thickest stuff off, I recommend a product called "road rub." It is good shiznitz. It's pretty much like a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, but in stick form like deodorant. Google it, good stuff.

The detailer at my dealer uses S-100 stuff in a tube. I think it's called something like All Surface Restorer. Worked better than any of the above methods and I've tried them all.
