I am frustrated. Have an 09 Ultra (mostly stock). Just purchased a new set of Screamin Eagle Fatshotz 2-into-2 slip on mufflers. I installed new exhaust clamps and tightened all bolts as per instructions. Problem is, the mufflers move back after a few miles. So, I moved them forward and retightened the exhaust clamps (very tight). Still move back. So, I removed the clamps and installed a 'shim' inside the clamp.....to get a snugger fit on the muffler. Retightened the clamps......again, very tight. Same thing....mufflers move back. What the heck. Doesn't seem possible. Any ideas?
I put the V&H Monster Ovals on my RK and had a similar problem, the mounting tang (not sure what it's really called) that bolted to the mufflers and then slipped into a bracket that was fitted with a rubber insulator would vibrate the rubber insulator forward and out of position which then allowed the "tang" to vibrate against the bracket making a fairly loud metal to metal rattle noise, I ended up installing (4) washers per bolt between the mounting tang and the muffler, which dropped the muffler down a bit but not noticable with the bags on. This solved the problem which probably means the mounting holes/ position on the mufflers are not in the exact stock location, no noise since.
I have the V&H slip on's and had the same problem. I used the old claps. I just used a rubber mallet to knock them back in place and kept tightening the clamps until they quit slipping. They'er fine now. The tak weld idea sounds good.
I solved the slip on muffler problem (sliding back) by installing new clamps and shoving the new muffler all the way forward, then tightened clamps to 70 foot pounds (more than recommended). Also lubricated the rubber bushing on the rear support brackets. Now work fine. Whew!
