OK so I want to replace my throttle cables with some stainless steel ones. The kit from HD is like $130 for the SS ones from HD or $140 for the diamondback ones from HD (whatever that is?)
OR I can get ones from J&P like this http://www.jpcycles.com/product/521-011
for $40 plus another $40 for the idler. That is $50 less. Can you tell me the HD cable is that much better? This cable is made in the USA. Anyone use these.
Also I have Carlini handle bars on my bike how do I know if I need to get a longer cable?
Same question for clutch cables...
This is the first thing I want to do now that I got the service manual and don't want to pay labor!
Thanks in advance!
Joe
no differance.. probably made on the same assy.line..just paying harley to repackage it.if you want to save money you really dont need the pull off cable, never was needed,it was a government thing from the 70's..
When you say the pull off cable, you mean the return cable? That isn't needed? I wondered about that, you have the spring on the throttle linkage so I wasn't sure the need for it? Do a lot of people run without them?
Joe
The pulloff is to allow poor maintenance , and worn out parts
if you keep your throttle cable/twistgrip/butterfly/friction brake in good shape the spring will return it fine..(return cable is to pulloff the throttle when something sticks)
also you do have a (or should have ) a kill switch if the throttle sticks open.
rode one cable for years,( still do on dirt bikes )
The cable from J&P is Barnett a decent brand, but they do not make the HD cables. I am positive that Magnum Shielding make all the Harley cable and brake lines. It depends if you want them to match or not. Barnett doesn't make brake lines.
To measure cable length, take a piece of string and run it from each control to the end of the run. That will give you accurate cable requirement length. Keep in mind that cable lengths are categorized by the length of the shield, not the actual length of the cable from tip to tip. I got my cables from J&P and have had no issues with them.
I've got the black HD Diamondback clutch cable (got it for cheap due to the dealer making a mistake on the price) and a Magnum Shielding black pearl brake line and the braiding looks identical. Might get the Magnum black pearl throttle/idle cables later but for now the stock cables work fine.
