I don't know about the distributor question--but do know that Ed's setup has an option specific to aftermarket, auto-advance distributors like the one on my '51.

As for flashing, CycleElectric's instructions say that's not necessary, and indeed I did not do it. But, then, I was using their generator fitted with their electronic regulator. Are you fitting just their regulator or using their generator, too?

Why not get an oem distributor with the advance rather than aftermarket?

Haven't found an OEM 66-69 auto advance yet. Have the mechanical advance but the set up I am going with doesn't have the provisions for the lefts side retard/advance

Has a rare tach cable drive on it too.

K, got the 66-69 auto advance, took it all apart but it will need refinishing

Cam has some obvious surface rust but I should be able to get most of it cleaned up well enough. The base plate, housing and shaft assembly will go out for new cad plating. There was no slop in the shaft and housing so the bushings are good to go. There was no excessive play on the gear end either. Weights "seem" fine and just a small amount of surface rust on the springs (tho I''ll most likely replace them).

Questions for the day...
1. How do I determine if the springs and weights need replacing?
2. What is the difference between the weights and springs used for 67-69 and 70-E78? Looking at them on the flea and they both look the same?
3. Have to remove the circuit breaker wire pin from the base. Noticed it is peened in place (my 49 uses one that is screwed int place). Peened stud vs screwed stud. Is that because the weights on the later style interferes with the earlier style stud used?

Well Hell's Bells, I kinda sorta answered question 3. Was digging thru my stash and opened a box I thought was an aftermarket electronic timer but found it was actually the 67-69 timer. (4th pic for comparison)

It is obvious that the spring and weight assembly is definitely NOT the same.

So Question 3.1...Can I use the weight / spring assembly the 4th pic? It definitely has less "moving" parts. Not against using the one from my stash but if I can use one with less parts I am all in for it. It's along haul from California to Florida if it needs fixing.

Left is the real one the right is the one we had used 20 plus years ago and the weights an springs will inter chasing with a 70 up advancer

Checking it would be no different than for a car. Because the timing window is so small, using a timing light to watch the advance may not be possible. The other is to run it on a distributor machine. Third option is put it in without knowing.
