Front and rear cylinders. Both are 61 ci and had stroker plates under them to accommodate the 74 bottom end. But as I mentioned I am thinking of doing away with the stroker plates and going with the 74 cylinders and pistons.

Eric..

"Notice hallmark E has no circle around it and that is consistent with that time period." So at what point did they add the "E" to the cases. My 49 EL is an early VIN (inside casting are "F8" and "G8") and neither the left or right case has that casting?

V twin has a resto replacement set with the orig early numbers in 74 bores with 8 1/2 pistons but we use them with the 7 /12 because of todays gas and ease of kicking

Dave, thanks for the photos. Sorry for the late reply but I’ve been offline for a few days.

Earliest DC I’ve seen on a Pan case is F 7 for June 47 casting. No E. And it seems there was no hallmark E on Pan cases into at least March 49 casting.
I don’t know what happened for April-May 49.

Earliest I’ve seen a hallmark E on a Pan case is June 49 casting but there is no circle.
The E seems to have remained the same type on the left case into at least Feb 51. On the R-H case it remained the same into at least Sept 50 but as early as Nov 50 the E changed slightly and that continued into at least Feb 51 although I don’t know what, if anything, the change indicated.

Earliest examples I have of a circle E hallmark on Pan cases are from May 52.
Eric

Well just shy of the 2-month mark and have gone from this

to this...

Looks like the original frame was from March of '54

When the paint is redone I am definitely going to have some of the ugliness taken out of (filler time) some of the welds, especially the re-weld on the top motor mount.

Everything is basically in plastic bins. Now I can go thru them and make a list of what needs to be rechromed and what will be new chromed aftermarket parts.

One thing that has to be addressed is with the sissy bar. If you look closely you can see that the sissy bar sits about 3/8 inch farther back on the right side. I asked my sister about it and she told me she always felt like she had to lean left to sit properly behind Michael. She thought it was the footpegs that were a bit off.

It means removing the chrome, taking it to my welder and having him shorten the right brace as well as relocating the hole for the brace that holds the fender in place on the right side. 40 years ago things in the chopper world were not quite so precise.

So I sourced a '48-'49 F/FL rear cylinder off the flea that has been re-sleeved for the standard bore. Has one broken fin is all. Have a 48-49 front that is close to 5 over already. The thought is to drive to L.A. Sleeve and have them re-sleeve the front back to stock (to match the rear) and have them add/size pistons and rings into mix as well (looks like they use Weisco). Thoughts?

And took the frame tanks and rear fender to a painter by the name of Daneen in Fremont (about an hours drive from me). Saw some of here work on one of the FB pages I subscribe to. Went well. She does all of her own work.

Tomororrow I drive to Sacramento to visit my welder and get the sissy bar squared away. The sooner I get that done the sooner I can get the paint done (looks like about 8 weeks total for that).

How much is it to sleeve a Harley barrel? I have to send some RZ500 barrels to LA sleeve to have them redone, no one up here wants to take it on.

Is the 5 over barrel bad or would it clean up at 10 over?

It'd clean up at about 70. But since I have one cylinder already re-sleeved, figure I'd do the other and start off with a standard bore for both. Have to call them to get an estimate.

John what pistons do you recommend. Don't need/want this to be a high compression affair, especially considering that the cases have been bored to accept the later style crank.
