Default Suggestion for My Ride Houston-Sturgis 2012

Hi Folks,
As the title says I’ll be riding from Houston to Sturgis (first trip for me on my new 2009 SERG) this year. I have been on Google earth and come up with these routes Houston (TX) to Lead (SD) where I’ll be staying. I have allowed three days travel time each way but the places I’ve selected to stop at along the way are just dots on the map. Trip breakdown by day below and links to Google Maps

Trip Journey
Day One From League City to Oklahoma City Oklahoma distance is 470 miles or
to Blackwell Oklahoma distance is 568 miles , on the following roads I45, I35 and US64

Day Two Oklahoma City to O’Neill Nebraska distance is 532 miles or
Blackwell to O’Neill distance 436 miles, on the following roads I35, US81, US89, US14

Day Three O’neill Nebraska to Lead South Dakota distance is 367 miles, on the following roads US281, US18, I83, I90.

Return Journey
Day One Lead South Dakota to Hastings Nebraska distance is 503 miles on the following roads US26, NE92, I80, US34.

Day Two Hastings Nebraska to Wichita Falls Texas distance is 550 miles on the following roads US283, US383-US83-US183, US287.

Day Three Wichita Falls Texas to League City distance is 400 miles on the following roads US283, US287, I45.

Advice I need from people that know these places,
1, Are these routes OK? Is there a better way to get there and back (more scenic, need to see places along the way).

2, Any stay away places I should not travel through or to stay clear of?

3, Any information on the places I have pick to overnight or are there better places to stay?

4, Should I travel on mainly interstates or are secondary roads OK?

See Links below to Google maps

Any advice from wish heads would be welcome hope to see you on the road.

Cheers

It appears like you have planned out the route to get there and back. I am not familiar with the area, but based on my personal crossing the country "experience", I prefer to avoid riding toll roads, most of them are not scenic. All you have to do is opt-out the "avoid toll" option in Google map.
Just me!

Take hiway 2 down through NE to Hastings. I live in Omaha and that is the route I take to and back from Sturgis.

Skip...too bad you don't have more time. You'll be slogging through some hot and muggy weather in August through that country. I know, because I did for many years. I think your planned route is about 1300 miles 1-way and I'm not sure there is much you can do with it over 3 days. Now, if you had 5 or 6 days to get to Lead, that would be something different.

Did this from Houston two years ago. I did it in 24 hours - pretty much straight thru - stopped to sleep for about 5 hours. Basically same route you have chosen.

I have not done this route, but when I go again, and if I have the time (which it appears you do), I may consider riding up thru CO instead. I have heard the ride up thru CO is very beautiful. The other route - not so much.

I live in central Ne. I would take Hwy 2 on your trip its desolate but I have always enjoyed running through sandhills. Then again I do like my solitude LOL. You head up 2 you could stay at Broken Bow and that would give you about the same distance for day three, there's not a whole lot between Broken Bow and Valentine. What ever you decide have a safe trip.

Hi All,
Thanks for you advice I will check everything out.
Haak30 and Faststeel,
I’ll look into using Hwy 2 and stopping at broken bow.
Mtgriz,
I’ll think about going up to Sturgis a few days earlier

Cheers
