You guys don't want to know much of that kind of stuff I saw get thrown out to rot in junk piles back when.
I saw quite a bit of that my self. I started saving some of that stuff getting junked but when I moved a few years ago I wound up tossing it out my self.
Making a little headway. I would not even call it a mock up at this point. Just seeing what bolts I have to do very little actually. I need an entire bolts kit for this bike.
Its a serious mish mash on bolts. Not a matched set of anything. But I expected that. So I am getting to know this bike...
Got the rear axle orientation worked out. Next are shock bolts, they can kind of go either way, obviously only one way is right.
This look ok? The fat end in and the smaller diameter out?
Illustrations of actual assembly seem rare. Got my axle worked out by using a V-Twin Mfg illustration. The service manual is helpful, but it seems with so many years of parts on this bike Its harder for me to order up correct parts. Colony will be my friend for awhile.
I know I am at the simple stage yet.
Nice job figuring it out. You should get your hands on the factory parts manual, it has exploded views of everything, and the Harley part numbers help with eBay searches.

I have a brand new service manual that came with the bike (!)... Will I locate the parts manual on ebay? And any particular year(s)?
Here is a number on the right side upright casting. Let me know if thats not the correct location.
Regarding that non factory weld on that plate... the story is the factory weld looked very weak and suspect to failure, in my friends mind. So they threw a couple of beads on it...

I think the stock shocks are 13", you sure have a large gap between the tire and fender.
That was while sitting on blocks, its sitting slightly lower now. No engine/trans or anything else mounted up yet either of course.
I am using the V Twin Mfg catalog 'bible' as my information sourcing at the moment.
Looks like '73-'85 shocks are 12.0", w 1" shorter being 11" offered.
Or '58-'72 shocks at 13.5", with shorter 12" being offered.
I am thinking 12" shocks should be low enough maybe...

When the swing arm changed in 73, the shock mount location did also. Shorter shocks were needed to keep the same ride height.
Also, the paper version of the parts manual is available on eBay and maybe even HD dealers for cheaper than V-Twin. Search part number 99456-84
