What a pain in the ***. Had to pull oil pump just to get check ball screw out. I tried everything but it wouldnt budge. Actually got the clip off end no problem and removed pump. Bike is spewing oil out of breather hose and last ride back tire was all over the place inner rear fender soaked in oil. Lost almost whole dam oil bag. Gaskets new check ball new clip i hope this solves it.
Cone is off makes it easyer to pull clip and end gear. Of course alot of fun to reassemble. Anyone have any tips they use to reinstall the key and clip?
what we do in my shop is talk to the owner about turning the vent exit fitting 180* so it points upward - than we connect a 3/8 hose / clamp to it and run it up with the other 2 hoses vent and return / accross the top of the oil tank and down the left side just above the chain < attach it to the down frame rail wire twin ties one on the hose one under it to the frame
2 things happen with this idea / first the oil has to travel 12 inches straight up to spill any out and second the vapor that comes from the hose, lubes the chain just enough to keep it moist not wet -- just my take doing -- jz
the engines open fitting to the out side air for the breather is a vent / ie breather as some call it - if it were pluged the system would not work at all
lots of shovels have a 6 inch hose coneceted to the fitting the original flat sides sent the hose over the back of the trans mount and located it so it does just what we do ( mist the chain ) except by sending it over the oil tank it has space in the length of hose for the occasional oil spit out - jz
Johnz. If I follow you right, that's basically what I did to mine too.
If you have the pump off already, you might want to check out the wear in the gears and pump body on the scavenge side, just to make sure it's scavenging correctly. Wouldn't hurt to check the wear around the breather gear either. Those can also cause excessive crank-case oil and some puking out the vent line.
Sure, but I don't really see any benefit in misting oil on the belt
1965 to the mid 80s everything was chain driven - belt drives dont benefit from oil misted BUT its a given - the vent hose run a foot or so straight up is the fix for slight sumping issues - sometimes you have to read between the lines i missed that being that simple - jz
