Default Weird Kickstand problem

I was sitting on my `09 Crossbones with it on the Kickstand (mapping out my next checkpoint) when I heard a loud noise like a metallic pop or twang from the Kickstand area. I checked out the Kickstand and everything seems to be in place and nothing is damaged, but now the kickstand won't stay up. The spring's still under tension, all the parts are still there, it doesn't bind going up or down, nothing looks damaged and I only weigh 180# so I shouldn't have bent it.

Anyone run into this? All my searches come up with wrong spring, needs oil or a new bushing - none of which seem to be the problem.

Do you have any pictures of the sidestand? Maybe the bolt holding the tab on the top broke?

I'll shoot one (and re-check for it) when I get off duty tomorrow morning. It seems like they were all there, though I was riding on a deadline and could have missed it. The tab is still there, as it still locks in place when weight is on it.

You may have stretched it. Did you recently change the spring, or anything else related to it? How long have you owned the bike?

I busted a spring once, when I was run off the road. Fortunately, I had a spare with me. Ironically enough, I used to never carry one until a friend told me how common it was to bend one. I thought he was pulling my leg, but they're only like six bucks so I picked one up while I was at the dealer, before my 2000 mile roadtrip to Sturgis. Damn glad I had one, and now I keep a spare in my saddlebag.

If it will retract but not hold itself up, then I would look at the spring and how the spring mounts also. Definitely look and see if the spring is damaged and depending on how old the spring is I would just get a new one. I just put a new one on my dyna for like 6 dollars and the stand actually stays tight against the frame when in the up position now.

The spring is the one it came with, so it could have fatigued without separating. For $6 it would be worth replacing it just to be sure, and maybe a second to keep with the tools.

The kickstand hasn't been damaged, but it does get a lot of use on rallies - ride to a point, jump off with it running to shoot a photo, and repeat for a day or two. Probably a bit rougher than the factory intended.

The spring broke most likely. Always carry a couple o tie wraps with you. Never know.

The kickstand doesn't have a "cycle life". The only wear part is the spring. Either your spring is bad, something that we can't see is worn, or damaged, or some hardware has come loose and compromised something. It's one of those deals where once someone else puts eyes on it, they say "oh, there's your problem". Some things are just hard to assess over a computer screen. But my bet... it's the spring. Seems like earlier, somewhere you said you were sitting on it, while it was on the kickstand. Very possible in the right situation, that can easily stretch the spring.
