Default License Plate Support Bracket Removal

Hey All,

Am I reading this correctly in the service manual where, from what I gather, to remove the license plate support bracket on my FLSTSC (that metal piece that curves up from the fender to the back of the upright license plate on the tombstone tail light) you have to take off the rear tire?

Looks like there's two screws holding that bracket in place under the tail lamp that have to be accessed from inside the rear fender.

Have I got that right? Damn me if I do. Here the laydown plate arrived late last night and I was looking forward to just popping the sucker on. Forgot about that support bracket...

I just swapped out to a lay-down plate on my deluxe a week or so ago and was able to remove the rear light without removing the rear tire. There isn't much room to work. Small hands or a helper with small hands would be a plus, but its do-able.

you do not have to remove the tire to remove this bracket you have to get it from inside the tail light the screws are facing up and when you remove the nuts they will drop if you do not play it right. this is important if your changing to the lay down plate you will need these in place i dropped mine through but got them back up there with out taking of f the tire with the help of a small set of hands.

I did the layback plate holder on my FLSTF, I just knelt down and reached up from behind the beast with one arm between the tyre and the rear fender and used ring spanner to remove and install.

The same with the indicator relocation kit.

At that angle it reminded me of when I worked with cattle.

Just remove the fender and you won't have to take off the tire or deal with tight spaces. Just be careful not to scratch up your paint while taking it off. It helps to have someone hold up the fender as you take the last couple of bolts off so it doesn't fall.

DONE! Just popped off the tail light cover, unscrewed the support bracket nuts, popped the cover inside the fender off the tail light wiring junk, pushed the screws through... then put them back.

Once I had the support removed, I actually put the screws for it back in place simply to cover up the holes... seemed to me that leaving those holes open, even if under the tail light cover, might not be the best idea since anything dripping through them would go right down into the wiring inside that inner fender cover.

Either way though, it was a piece of cake. Done in time for dinner.

Thanks for the info!
