coatit,
If you use stainless steel nuts along with the SS threaded rod its a no brainer to polish them up to look like chrome and still be maintenance free.
jonesboy1,
Very good ideas, well exicuted. I might have used a rectangular aluminum plate instead of the washers. That way you could have put some kind of sealing/glue compound between it and the leather to seal up that slotted hole, make it a but more water repelent, and give the badge a bit more support.
But that aside, its a really good idea I'm going to have to remember If I manage to find a cheap set of bags that happen to have them.
I dont know why I would want to seal up that slotted hole? (more water repelent) it's a seat, out side in the weather. Getting Glue or sealant to stick to leather is not real successful so I did not bother just making a mess, I did think of the aluminium plate idea but seeing as I dont intend to tie off tent poles off them I used washers, & they are only badges. We all do things differently and it is quite easy to over Engineer just to keep yourself busy in the shed instead of on the sled.
Tell me what you think. Made these out of a set of mud flaps from Auto zone . Used tin snips to cut out and cleand them up with a belt sander. Thinking of spraying them with the paint used on the engine. cost 10 bucks, 20 more if i paint them.
that's a nice mod! just one question? what's holding them on? glue? what type?
The tank panel just slips under the consol and is bolted under the seat. the frame trim is is just held on with painters tape for now , just to see how it looks. plan on using 3-m double sided tape

Rather than paint it, I like it the way it is. You might want to think about getting some door edge guard strips to put around the edges.
That will keep the vibrations from making the metal cut up the paint on the top of the tank.
You can usually get it in the local Auto Zone or Advanced Auto in black or chrome for about $10.
If you make it a little bit longer on top you should be able to punch a couple of holes in tio to fit over the posts on the under side of the dash panel that the original leather piece hooked to so you don't have to use the double back tape on the painted surface.

I think that looks pretty bada$$!! Love it....may have to use it myself...I'll give you props though!!
This is some plastic I had at work and thought it might help straighten my plate (seems when my brothers Night Train tried mounting my Fatboy during a hard left the plate tried to defend the Fatboys honor).
Kind of thick but it is all I had laying around. Will post final pics when I counter sink the mounting holes and get it all bolted down.
Don't need this bent up POS anymore
Thick I know but free
Love the way HD just bolts a metal bracket right to the paint!!!
Just setting in place. Heading to good ole' Parkrose Hardware for the best stainless fastners in the NW. Counter sinking the base and using tapered head hardware. Mounting to fender with rubber washers. Better pics to follow
Thanks to the earlier post on this mod (will credit ya when I dig for the post again). This is probably the best thread on the internet for low buck Harley fix its.
Thanks to all the add and comment. Please don't stop!!!
P.s. Finished and posted the last steps I did in the thumbnails.
Nice save coatit, that's a hundred or so bucks the MOCO isn't going to make off replacing your bent parts.
Don't anyone forget there is a couple of other DIY treads like this one in the Touring, Sporty, and Dyna sections.
Mud's over in Dyna land is a lot bigger than ours, and a lot of the 'tricks' they have come up with work just as well on a Softail as they do on a Dyna.
I'm looking to fill the space where my license plate and taillight used to be on my stock FXST Softail fender, as I have a side mount plate setup. I had a DBO fender, but decided I liked the look of the stock fender more. Just want to keep the side mount and fill the ugly space where you can see the strut brackets and wiring under the fender from the back. Any ideas?
