Your not alone my friend, but I don't want to have to wait for a new paint job.
Given my present income level that might take a while and I want one now!!!
PS if you go back to that dealer anytime soon, see if you can swipe the fender off that bike. My bike is vivid black and I'm sure it would look so much better on mine.
No problem....I won't fight you for that Vivid Black fender even though I am contemplating a Vivid Black repaint myself. However, the fender that was on that bike had the pinstripes....my plan is for no pinstripes or emblems.
Funny thing, the HD salesman, after walking the floor for these past ffew years, never noticed the design change in the fenders until I pointed it out. It really sucks when I have to train sales guys.....where's my commission?????

That's OK the pin stripes probably won't match the ones on my bike now.
I know what you mean about ignorant sales people. When Stmplr and I were in the dealership checking them out. The same guy who sold us our bikes, and has been there for over 10 years, hadn't noticed the fender change either.
So if you manage to get a commission, good luck with that, let me know how you did it cause I want a piece of that action too.
....thanks dave
yup thats what I thought too... those ridges make no sense to me at all...

If you think about the engineering of the tank there may be several explanations for the ribs that make a bit more sense.
The tank is made of cast aluminum unlike the old standard stamped steel tanks on all the other HD bikes.
Being cast aluminum they are far more susceptible to being damaged or even broken where a sheet steel tank would just be bent.
The ribs ugly as they are (to me anyway) also offer more surface area to aid in cooling the oil in it.
The last thing I can think of for them is that because the tank is wider than other Softails. The ribs may also function as a way to help keep your leg from touching the main (and hot) body of the tank.
The real reason is probably just styling or something else, but its fun trying to figure out why they design things the way they do.
Like was said, the radius of the fender is all wrong and doesn't look right lowered. What you get is the fender fitting tight in the middle and too far on either end. New fender is the only viable option unless you want to pie cut the whole thing and reshape the radius which is a lot of work.

funny you say that...did a hard 2 hr ride on a 36 degree day and assuming the temp guage is accurate there was no prob...but I did get one punter as I pulled up at the pub tell me that I have dramatically sacrficed the cooling capacity andblah blah blah....and that you shouldnt mess with bikes because of blah blah blah...and my amercan made wheels were actually made in taiwan etc. ect. I did ask him what he rode at which point the conversation stopped....
......as Ford Fairlane once so elequently put it...so many a$$holes, so few bullets...
