Took my bike in for the 1k service today, I have about 1171 on it. So, as usual I can't sit in the place long without wanting to buy something so I decided to buy a smoked low profile detachable compact windshield #57702-08. I thought this would help with wind and make for a better ride, BUT, I drove 15 miles with it and called the dealer and returned it. I hated it. All the wind went up from the bottom into my helmet and rattled my brain so much I almost chucked it in the ditch! The service shop was cool with it and gave me the $320 something back with no questions asked.
Anyways, just wanted to share. I don't think I will ever buy a windshield again for the bike.
Don't know what model you have, but HD lower deflectors work pretty well at knocking down the buffeting from below. A better solution is a batwing fairing if you like the style. A basic black Memphis Shades fairing from Phatperformance will run you around $400, without sounds. Recommend the 9" windshield and the lowers if you go for it.

Same problem I had when I tried a windshield. Turned around and took it right back. As far as the lowers knocking down the wind from underneath, I'm sure they do a fine job. But for me I didn't like the look of the shield anyhow, let alone without having to put lowers on as well. Besides, <grin> Windsheilds are for airplanes as I tell all the baggers I ride with..
I went on a 1,142 mile trip with 15 other Harleys for 3 days and I was the only Harley without a windshield. During the trip a few of them asked.."you OK?" Need us to slow down? The wind killing ya?" It was all in fun,,but my standard answer was" let's ride."
But if I ever get a bagger, I'm getting a shield, a radio, CB, GPS, and heated gear....
Thanks guys. Even though I returned the shield I kept the docking kit on incase I ever decide on one again....Do you think the standard height would still give me a problem with the wind coming up? I think it's a few inches taller.
I really don't mind the wind and I wear a FF so is a windshield really necessary for long trips you think?
This talk about buffeting issues with a windshield sure doesn't give me a warm fuzzy about the windshield (new blacked out version) I have on back order at the dealer.
I thought a windshield was supposed to take care of the wind trying to separate me from the bike thing.....not give me other issues to worry about?
depends on your helmet to. If you have a visor on your helmet that comes off, take it off. Helps out. I hate the windshield, im glad i got the the windshield used for $100, so i might end up selling when i try the windshield one more time.
Gave me the biggest headache when i rode for 60 min.

The height of the windshield has nothing to do with the wind coming from below. The HD lowers may not look great, but they work pretty well. With a windshield, at speed, just place your left hand below, at chest level, and in front of your face. You will likely find that chest buffeting, and uplifting of the helmet, comes from below.
On long trips, fatigue will be reduced considerably with a windshield or batwing fairing. You can really get beat up by 70 MPH speeds over a distance.
As I posted on another thread, the 07 Heritage I recently bought had a standard size windshield on it which I replaced with the shorter windshield because I prefer to look over rather than through the windshield. Now this bike also had the chrome lowers on it and I got almost no buffeting with the standard size and very little buffeting with the shorter size windshield even at 70 mph.
I wear two different helmets, one is a 3/4 open face with a long visor. The other is a open face half helmet with a very short visor. I can tell no difference with the buffeting. The lowers are the key me thinks.
