Sometime After removing the "hines" exhaust and installing the factory pipes my (new to me) bike starting mis-firing (also used reg. octane fuel - but two tanks of 93 octane since). This happens after a brief warm up, in first gear and seems to stop mis-firing after a few miles. Also, it has stalled a few times - which is dangerous!
This is what I have done:
1. Sea Foam in 2nd and 3rd tank. (93 octane)
2. checked for error codes, No errors.
3. Remove battery connection (to reset computer?)
4. Checked air filter - may need a new but not that bad.
5. Was told by org. owner that he had done nothing to change timing/firmware etc. for hines exhaust. (Bike has 11,000 miles.)
The bike seems to idle a little low, just after start up.
I replaced one, because the dealer had only one. I think your are referring to the "rings" that allow the collar to pull up to the head, thus creating a seal?
06's had injector service bulletin. If yours are 8 degree injectors they should be replaced with 25. The symptoms are exactly what you describe - runs rough cold, rough idle when cold. I have no idea why it appeared after 11k miles and/or exhaust swap. You can check your injectors per the file below. The dealer swapped mine for free.
KumaRide, Thanks for the advise! This could be the issue, the org. owner swap parts from Softail to softail (+5 or so bikes!) and told me "he" never had the factory pipes on... I assume the local dealer (a different one from the org. owner) could tell me if the injector was replaced using the VIN? . I don't think I can see the injector without removal of other parts?
BTW, is that your Cobalt/silver FatBoy? My Softail is the same colors. Nice looking bike you got if that is yours.
Call a dealer and ask if they will check them out and reference the service bulletin number. If they say no, call the Moco directly and see what they say. That is who I went through first.
Yep, cobalt blue and silver. Shiet, that makes two of us on this site...
I found the injector after looking on both sides and then back to the correct side (Double yellow side!) Looking like I will be visiting the shop again.
Does your bike have a stage 1 download? Not sure what you have. If it does have stage 1 then you should get a new one made for the 25 injectors. The dealer uploaded a new version when they swapped out my 8 for 25's. Good luck!
