Default ape install help needed - pc bars and grips

hey,
i have a slight problem. i "think" i have a solution......but want some opinions and suggestions.

im in the middle of installing 16in carlini evil apes on my xbones. problem is carlini powder coats their entire bar (i got black). my perf mach contour grips don't fit on the bars due to the pc. one side fits snug....throttle side is no fit.

i think i can just sand down the carlinis to get some of the pc off. just a little hesitant w/out a second opinion.

is this common? has anyone done this ? or have tricks they can share?

thanks for help

Sanding off the PC is your best solution.

If you get some crocus cloth or a plumbers roll of 2" wide sand paper and wrap it around the tube so you get an even finish it should slide on with little effort. PC is only .030 max usually so it doesn't take much to get it off.

thanks for the tip...i just did a mock up...guess what. my wild 1 risers dont fit the carlinis either! they fit....but excess pc is preventing them from closing (top/bottom half)

geez...

love the high quality of the carlinis but i mean c'mon...really i have to sand them down?

reminds me of the threads from those who had to cut 1inch off their rsd bars so their grips would fit.

Shouldn't take long with an emery cloth roll. Sounds like the OD on those bars is a bit on the heavy side, or the grips are machined super close. My grips fit over the PC without a problem, room to spare.

The riser top clamp should NOT touch the bottom half of the riser clamp. Proper fit should maintain a small gap between them. Once the halves touch, you loose the ability to increase clamping force regardless of the torque you put on the fasteners. Good luck, and be sure to throw some pics up!

I agree - sand them down - it's not that hard to do. I've done it on footpegs and other parts when they pc'ed the entire damn thing and they wouldn't fit in the mounts anymore. You'll be fine just take your time and tape off all the areas that you 'accidentally' don't want to mess up - grip area and clamp area Good luck!!!

thanks. taping off is a great idea.
also, after a few beers, thinking about it...i am at the "f-it" attitude. both the grips and risers will cover up the bars, so...ill sand those down w/no worries.

just an unanticipated step....

oh yeah, i managed to slice through my fuel gage wires when. cut. the crossover line (sigh)
so, ill have to get a new connector.

I had tried to sand my PC on Carlini down to try and fit Arlen Ness grips. Not sure how all this works, but check this out. Arlen ness grips, fit stock harley bars perfect. Can't fit Carlini bars. Harley grips easily fit both stock and Carlini bars with no sanding.

So I want my Arlen Ness grips to fit so I go ahead and sand down PC on Carlini. It took some time and was ugly after I finished. So I sprayed a super thin coat of black spray to prevent rust. I insert the Arlen Ness grip and it wasn't enough still. So I went Autozone and bought a brake honing device and honed out the Arlen Ness grip where it is stepped down and made it wider. It slid over, but still had some sticking issues. Finally just went and bought a Harley grip that was my second choice to the Arlen Ness grip and it slid on no problem.

So you can't blame Carlini, because their bars lined up fine with all Harley grips, and you can't blame Arlen Ness because their grips lined up fine with Harley bars..... Just aftermarkets don't always line up perfectly. Either try and mod it or grab some other grips. Sucks that that small of a difference can make or break the set up.

interesting...
i emailed carlini and connected withRex.
he stated that they had some complaints on the pc being too thick on the throttle side of the bars. so, they went to their pc'er and found out that the pc'er was hanging the bars sideways when applying the powdercoat. the throttle side of the bar was the low point and collected some excess pc. they have since corrected it and had the pc'er adjust how they hang the bars. i also mentioned to him this problem is also happening with the lip of the stepdown for the risers. he took my feedback. he also mentioned the reason they pc the whole bar and not tape off sections is because a lot of their customers are using grips with holes that show the bars.

he instructed me to lightly sand about 1/4 inch of the end of the throttle bar and the grips should fit fine.

so...mystery solved.

thanks for all the posts and tips on this issue.
