Default Steering Grease???

I hope you guys can help me out here. I have a 2012 Fatboy lo. Ever since I have had it (1 year and a half now) I notice when riding that an oil like substance is thrown back on my tank, heads, pants and horn cover. It is coming fron the lower portion of my steering neck. Have had it in three times for this issue. first time they told me because we were having extremely hot temps so was melting the grease. Second time all they told me was everything was within Harley specs, third time they tell me that this is normal for some bikes and that they see this all the time (wold have thought that they would have told me that on the first time)??? Have any of you guys heard of this or might possibley know what the problem is?? thanks in advance

Ed

Normal. Usually wiping it off one or two times will work until the next time you grease it. At least it looks like your dealer did grease it.

You may just have some water in the Neck. Get a grease gun, some grease and pump in a LOT of grease to force out the “Old stuff” and you should be good to go.
Yes you will half to wipe off the “New” grease a time or two but that should be it.

I like to wrap the lower seam between the fork and the steering head with rope to close the gap prior to filing up the frame's head tube with grease. I pump grease in until I can see the grease squeeze out the upper seam between the frame's head tube and the upper triple tree. That way it gets to the upper bearing, which is usually the one that goes bad (probably due to a lack of grease!!). Of course, i remove the rope when I am done greasing it up.

Give it a whirl!!

Mine does the same once in a great while. Lube it yourself with some "high temp" grease. It flows much less and at a higher temp so it helps. I found Lucas high temp grease at home depot and lowes in big and small tubes for grease guns. Once you do lube it yourself, just wipe it down a couple times and it should be much better. BUT, you may have to let the grease thats in there already get pushed out first...This cut it down to almost never for getting on me or the bike. The other way to look at it, if this is the worst that happens with these bikes, your golden!!

Yea, its common. when new Ur bearing are packed from factory. But, not the Neck.
Thats why when U grease the bearings the first time U have to fill the whole neck with grease before U get enough to force some to and through the bearings.

I use the Neck bearing Grease that MoCo sells, my experience with it is it seems to be thicker and it doesn't come out afterwards like regular auto wheel bearing grease. But still I have to wipe it off several times each time I grease them, which is every spring.

Yes it's normal.
Seeing that you live in St. Louis other than perhaps June-Sept. you shouldn't have a problem.

Just go to Walmart and get a small hand grip grease gun and some small tubes of general purpose grease. When the weather gets hot (>90) every couple of weeks wipe off the expelled grease with a paper towel and give the neck bearing a couple of squirts of new grease.

That's all that's needed.
