I have an 02 Sportster that died last week at bike week in Daytona. It started and ran fine before, rode all day for a few days... Pulled into a parking lot Monday afternoon and it died as I came to a stop. Couldn't get it started again. Got it home and found I have no spark at the plugs when grounding plug wires to the block. Initially thought it was coil and replaced it but, still no start. Don't want to keep throwing parts at it and looked up what to test. I have power in the wht/blk wire to the coil and a solid 12+ volts on the battery. Starter turns over strong but, no spark at plugs. Exhaust smells strong like gas so no fuel problem.
What's my best plan for testing out ignition module? Or is there something else I should check first?
Unlikely that your problem is the engine control module. Certainly possible, however, they typically do not fail. A Harley Davidson service manual for your model bike will walk you through the necessary steps to troubleshoot the ignition system.
if I remember correctly the ignition controller has a light on it that should turn on and off as you turn the motor over.. so pull the cover for the controller and watch... you have 12v to the coil that tells me that you have 12v to the controller...the bell behind the controller that "tells' the controller when to fire may be messed up (it is not uncommon) or the electric eye that reads the gap in the ignition bell may be dirty or bad...no way to tell without taking off the cover and looking...
actually the link is funky... click link and go to OEM Harley parts finder and type In year (click) model (click) and electronic
control module.. roll down and you will see the set up
