Default Hot cam question

I was looking to buy the screaming eagle cam for my 04 sportie 1200C, is there anything else I would need to change? Timing, ignition, rejet? Is this something a newbie mechanic can do with the service manual or is it really complicated? Thanks for any help.!

You don't say if your bike stock or if you completed Stage 1? There is not much point in doing the cam if you haven't at least completed Stage 1.

Which SE Cam's, as they make 4 or 5 different 'grinds' for the Sportsters...

I was running the Screamin' Eagle "E" cam's in my 2005 1200C, and there was a very noticeable improvement in both horsepower and torque, and no noticeable loss on the bottom end.

The are a straight 'bolt in' on the 2004+ models.

Here is some information on the various SE Cam's for the Sportsters, from the NRHS site. The SE Cam's for the Sportsters (along with comments and detail specifications are about halfway down the page).

FX,
I put Andrews N-4 Cams in my '06 1200C and really like them. You need to do all the other stage one mods first though. N-4's I don't think will work in an '04 though, HD did some different things with the clearance on the '06. Get alot of opinions, there are lots of choices and it of course depends upon how much increase you are looking for. www.andrewsproducts.com has a good web site with alot of helpful information.

My wife rides a 04 1200C Stage I, sweetbike and stays with my strong running Stage I Deuce nicely. I have considered N4s and noted with interest the SE "E" comment and looked at spec sheet...that is bolt in with all that lift (.551)? Sounds good that it pulls well with no noticeable down low power loss. Would welcome more comments, particularly on these 2 cams...numbers are quite different but users report similar results.I know search turns up tons on each but a fresh look and new insight is helpful, particularly head to head. John

'04 - '06 internals are the same except for the transmission. If they fit in an '06 they should fit in a '04 (make sure to check clearances just to be sure).

I think the issue was some new type springs HD was trying in the '06 that allowed for a very small increase in room there. Got that from a friend in a small local shop who new a mechanic at HD. You'll find different specs printed on the same cams in different catalogs, ie. Drag Specialty, J&P, V-Twin. Additionally I found most don't want to commit to reccomending because the clearance is extremely close. Be sure to check it!! Not good if things BUMP! You also certainly want to do the EIM, because as soon as the cams are in you hit the rev limit on the stock unit real fast in the lower gears. Lots of power, the guy who help me do the engine work races and he was pretty impressed.

Cams are only one part of the engines makeup. They must be the right cam for the setup you have. Many people think of cams being a "power adder" But there not. They will determine the RPM range where the rest of the engine can work. But the rest of the engine must be setup to do its part. If not your waisting money and performance will actually suffer ! JMHO....
