2007 Nightster, low fuel light didn't work, ran out of gas in the middle of nowhere. Has always turned on at 95-100 miles. Has anyone encountered this and found a solution? The Harley service manual has no information on troubleshooting this system. Could just go by the ODO, but would like the light to work as it is much easier to respond to relative to low fuel.
turnsignals and horn working? my recollection (could be wrong) is that the fuel light is on the same fuse as those...
Power comes from 15A fuel pump fuse thru orange with grey stripe wire, thru pump, then to fuel sender resistor assembly, then out thru yellow with white stripe wire to instruments.
If your fuel pump works it's not the fuse, most likley a stuck float in the fuel sender resistor assembly or fried LED on indiactor lamp.
I'm thinking of just disconnecting mine as it's not accurate anyway and is a pain in the ***, odometer is the only reliable system IMHO.
The fuel light on mine (09 1200N) is worthless. Comes on all the time, sometimes less than 15 miles after filling up. I just use the trip odo and get fuel every 90 miles or so.
My 09 Iron had the same problem, it just stopped working... at first I thought I was riding better and getting better mileage, found out that was wrong. I was passing a gas station at the time though. I ended up taking it to the dealer, they replaced the fuel sending unit, that didnt fix it, they looked into a bunch of other stuff and ended up tracing the wires and still could not get it to turn on. Eventually they had to call Harley and I guess they talked them through figuring it out, it works fine now...
Considering probably 99% of all low fuel lights are flaky and/or inaccurate, you have to wonder just how much money HD has lost with warranty claims on this issue since 07.
I'm wondering why people rely on these lights and not just keep it on the odo and go by some mileage number. IF you know what mpg you are getting you always will have a good estimate of when to fill up...I would assume and that is tough to do...that 100 miles would be a good round number for folks to follow in most any circumstance.
