I think you've had every question you've asked answered, except for whether post-'03 cams being compatible w/the earlier cam cover.

Taking a look at the Andrews catalog, it looks like the Y2K and later cams didn't change fitment. (in Y2K - HD changed to a different contact pattern for the pinion/#2 interface)

Keep your eyes open on eBay, and remember that the aluminum covers, even if they look cruddy, are easily polished or painted. Gasket surface condition, and the condition of the cam bushings is of paramount importance.

Do you have the Factory Manual for your bike? For things that you haven't "customized" already - it's probably the best money you'll spend.

Cool with me, ride your bike the way you want as will I. And I think my chances of wrecking are no greater or any less than yours.

yeah i got a manual. the casting number on the part number ends in -04 so i was thinking that only 04-up might fit.....i might just buy one on ebay and see if it fits. trying to find one to match my motor finish....

If I'm not mistaken, the difference is that the '04 and later castings don't have a provision for the end of the #2 cam to protrude through the cam cover for the ignition rotor to bolt up. Compare pics of the two (hint: google "CAM SWAP") you'll see for yourself.

one shop i talked to said they swapped cams to but because they were also doing a 1200 upgrade and cams at the time. i bet if i put cams in the cover would work. the cames dont change in part number on the andrews catalog like earlier said. or i could run that ammp3 ignition and not have to change anything with the cams but that thing is like $700.
