Default First HD Purchase

Hello HD Forum Members,

I'm look to purchase my first HD after riding Honda motorcycles for the past 15 years. I know fair pricing for the Japanese bikes but when it comes to the HD i'm not that in tune with price. So, I'm looking for some expertise on this forum.

This is what I'm look at:

1999 Harley Road King,Twin Cam 5 Speed. Fuel Injected .Dripping in Chrome,Leather Hard Bags,Rare Factory Purple Paint .Reinhart Duals. Oil Pressure Guage,Quick Release Windshield And Backrest.Runs And Looks Mint. $8,500. Has 65,000 KMS.

Also, what questions should I ask from the owner regarding up to date serving done on the bike?

Is this a reasonable price for end of season buy or can I do a lower offer??

Thank you all for your input.

Rob

I don't know what bikes sale for in your area , but a 99 road king in excellent condition retails at 7750.00 in my area.

I agree, that is not overpriced by any means. As long as it's in good shape you should go for it.

Baxter- the '99 is now "old".
HD dealers may not be interested in servicing an older bike- or stock parts for it
( try calling your local shops and asking service)

It was the first year for the twin cam- problems incl. cam bearings, cam drive, and on models before 9/98 the pinion bearing.

The early twin cam produced only about 55 HP due to head design

the EFI is not great and many have problems with that - leading to a carb conversion $600~$2000 depending on if you can do it yourself ( as efi parts can be hard to find and yours are all 17 years old...pump, seals, filter, formed lines etc)

that is the final year for single caliper brakes on a 400 kilo bike- they work, but later versions work much better.

realistically- you buy now, you get in a couple of local rides, maybe new years putt...but it'll sit in the shed until march

Nice that he is in Orillia- so less commuting, more like pleasure riding in the country

ask him about the 04- why does he have 2- is he a dealer?

Rob, Mike has great advice here, if it was me I would stretch & look for a later model, the engine, ride & comfort has improved over the years. Good luck on your search, Harley's are a nice bike to ride.

totally agree find an 02 touring bike - best year made - change out the plastic cam chain tensioner (either gear drive or 07 set up) and your good QUOTE=bigdumbnoitall00;14578451]02 is one of the best years, newer style fuel injection, stronger swing arm,and forged crankshaft, timken bearings.[/QUOTE]
