The steel in the back rest is really not all that hard. I bent mine back about 5 degrees with a couple of pipe wrenches. I think I used a 14" and an 18". Tighten the jaws so that the rod is in the middle of the jaws. Put the wrenches about 2" from each other and in opposite directions like you were going to put a twist in the rod. With the handles paralle, push the ends towards one another. You may need to change the position of one of them so you can put more of a bend in it. Do this six or eight times until you get them both bent the same and far enough back.
One of these days I'll make a movie about this and post it on utube.

I tried to bend mine in my vise and gave up, I thought that was some really hard steel. Took A LOT of heat to be able to bend them. But now they're perfect

I had the adjustable backrest, but, it crowded my wife, so I sold it. Now I am looking at the Low-Profile style backrest (52900-98) hoping this will allow a little for room. Does this backrest fold down forward to allow the passenger to get on easier?

I have the Softbrake version of the same thing and with the brake 1-3/4" farther forward and slightly lower and the shifter 1-1/2" farther forward it lets my 6'3" frame stretch out much better and has made it much better fit for me.

I feel your pain, I also put 3or4 washers under the front bolt. I went and took my covering off to see if I can thin it down or set it farther back that way. I ,ve been looking at the backrest off of a SEUC It is thinner by a long ways compared to mine. Looked it wish book and did not see it for sale by itself without the mounting hardware. Dan
