Default Hey Y'all! Electrical Problems

Hi guys -

I'm hoping someone can give me some pointers or might have incurred this issue before. My 1995 FLHR just blew all the bulbs and fried the battery. I've had the bike for about a year now and it is in fantastic shape (26,000 miles total). I've replaced the battery, checked and re-checked all the fuses and relays for the lighting system and everything looks good. I pulled the headlight nacelle and checked the connectors there...appears good too. I've already fried a new headlight and one of the passing lights again. Also, the turn signals never did work again after replacing the bulbs. The bright still works, but the tank indicator does not illuminate. Any ideas for someone who hates electrical systems? I have an appointment on Wednesday to take it into the dealership, but If I can get it fixed before that it would be awesome since my dad rode up to Seattle to visit and we'd like to be able to ride more before he heads home to Texas.

Based on your description my best guess would be that your voltage regulator has died and you're getting straight high voltage from the stator to the system.
Look in the Electrical section stickies for a how to on checking the entire charging system.

Yep. Sounds like voltage is way too high. New regulator, new battery and a bunch of bulbs. Be thankful you didn't have infotainment, amplifiers, etc!

Could you rent a bike for the week to spend time riding with your dad? Electrical problems take a lot of time to diagnose. And even more patience to do the repairs.

Please go rent a bike. This from a dad who would give anything to ride with my son. Time is the most valuable asset you can give to your dad.

This. I'd give pretty much anything to ride with my boys. Neither of them ever got the bug and I fault myself for that.

Default Thanks everyone!

I really appreciate your advice. I'll look into renting a bike, or maybe taking one on a " test ride" if the shop will let me. Crossing my fingers!

For sure your Volt Regulator went out in the open position and created that problem. Replace the Volt Regulator and your problems will be solved. I have not had good luck with many brands, so my recommend is Cycle Electric, great people and quality products. Safe travels and ride safe. http://www.cycleelectricinc.com/ Say hi to Dad for us....
