You can do like most Harley owners, myself included, and start with pipes, breather, and remapping. Then you'll either add cams or big bore. Then you'll do the heads. Then you'll do the cams again, chain the exhaust, add a bigger throttle body, etc..... Get the picture. or... you can wait, read, and learn about the various "kits" such places as Head Quarters and R&R offer (there are hundreds of others). Then do your mods at ONE time and save about 50% of the money you have wasted picking away at it one step at time. I like to compare upgrading Harley's tothe saying, "why is it you always have time/money to do it right the second time...."

I`ve been thinking about doing the same to my 08 ultra. I've been reading on here alot and I think the cheapest way to add useable torque is with a 2-1 pipe. The D&D fatcat seems to be the best I can come up with, then the others follow close behind. Add a hi-flow A/C and a fuel managment system could probably do it youself for around a grand or less.
Here's a simple stage 1 that should yeild fairly good torque increase
1- hi-flow air cleaner $140.00
2- V&H pro pipe BP- 500.00
3- V&H fuelpak - $ 240.00
if you want to spend more you do this:
1- hi-flow air cleaner $140.00
2 - D&D fatcat - $650.00
3 - PC III usb - 350.00
or
4 - or some kinda auto tuner instaed of #3 if wanted - $650 -$800.00
you should get good useable torque and HP increase for $900 to $1500 smackers and should let the bike run cooler also.
Good luck on your decision.

Since you are in California this adds a level of difficulty to making modifications. I seem to remember that you said your Ultra had warranty. If you are concerned about not voiding the warranty then you are pretty much limited to whatever the Harley dealers can do that is CARB approved. Since this is a used bike you may be limited to stage 1 upgrades (i.e. air cleaner, slip on mufflers and stage 1 download). If this is a concern then check with your dealer. Many on this forum will advise aftermarket modifications and I am sure thatsome of them are very knowledgable. But not all of them are concerned about warranty or our situation in California. I would say ride it a while and establish a dialog with your local dealer.

Mufflers, air cleaner, race tuner and don't skip the dyno time. Down loads are a bandage; dyno time is the cure. If you have to save up another month then do it. You'll be ahead in the long run.

I would go with a fuel management system first to help with heat. I like the tm with a/t because any other change you make are compatible with it.

oh yea, I forgot to add, if you want to be tired to $90+ an hour labor at Harley dealer, then go with the HD SERT (and keep in mind the narrow band HD 02 sensors are junk). The money you'd spend for SERT and one tuning session would pay for a Zippers Thundermax Auto Tune. My second choice when budget is a concern would be the PCIII and block off the 02 sensors.
