I just changed thetail pipes again. I already have a SERT, TRU DUALS, SE SLIP ONS and SE AIR. I was giving some other more open pipes that I've tried and like. I get better mpg, and the power is still good. But now I get a little back fire which I'm sure is because it is now a little rich or lean or I need to check my clamps or for exhaust leaks. But beside that I don't care to pay any one to have it Dyno-ed again. I will recheck the clamps and gasket etc.
These are old pipes so colorbluingis already on them.
The Question is will a little popping or backfire hurt the engine or anything else? Cause I like IT.
I would check for leaks, first since that is easy and no cost.
I would pull your plugs, clean them up. Then take your bike out on the hiway/interstate for a 5-10 mile ride. Then pull your plugs. They should be a golden/brown. If your plugs are white, or really light grey/ashy then you are too lean! I would rather run a little rich than lean. JMO
If you are running lean, too lean, then yes you could hurt something for sure! If all you did was changed your slip ons, I would not think you would see a night/day difference between the performance of your bike.
OK, Maybe first we should define backfiring. When I was a kid (many years ago) It was a loud bang that come from the tail pipe. So what are we calling popping and backfiring today. I do not get aloud bang or anything that I would call a pop. I get a deeper rumble from the decel of my scooter now. But no bang. Help me out here. I don't want to hurt my ride, but I still like the best mpg I can get with it or any thing I own. But yes I like power too.
So once again the Question is, Does popping?,or backfiring? hurt anything. But first what do you call backfiring or popping. I know what causes it and how to fix it. I just want to know how to define it and weatner it will hurt my ride.
"Popping" or "backfire" are terms that are somewhat subjective to different people. With some motor / exhaust combinations it will be inevitable.
I think most people are referring to the popping on normal decel, this usually is caused by being too lean.
Being rich can do the same sort of thing but sounds different. A lean pop is usually a rolling sort of machine gun type sound. You can hear it on any given summer day listening to the Sportster kids with open drag pipes. A rich induced "backfire" is more of a single "blurp" sort of sound.
Prior to installing my Rinehart TD's, my Ultra would really pop on a hard decel caused by a too lean condition. I had the bike re-dyno'd after the duals and I gained 14 hp and 5 mpg even though my guy was DUMPING fuel to this thing. It will now "blurp" once in a while due to a rich condition at very low throttle positions. If I am running slow, hit the throttle and have to decel it pops pretty good just once, caused by the motor being "loaded up" with fuel.
I would imagine that from the sound of your set up, you are getting a lean pop.
No substitute for a good management system such as a SERT of the like and a good dyno guy. The SERT will allow many variables to be changed in order to get the most power, optimal mpg and lower operating temps.
Its your tuning, no loose clamps or that, you changed it from where it was tuned right. So now you must live with it or pay to have the map adjusted,or put it back like it was those are the only options that you have.
OK, But the real question was and it was the main question. Will it hurt anything? I have no blue pipes after 300 miles, and to me it just sound like a loud rumble when come off the interstate.

That answer can only be found by you. You must do plug checks to see if its running too rich, black and sooty, or too lean white or blistered looking or just right a slight tan or grey color. If it runs very rich, it will wash out the cyls and wear the engine faster, if its way to lean it will run hot and could burn up the motor, prolonged running of either can hurt a motor. So as much as it cost to buy your bike having it tuned to run right is a small price to pay. IMO
