I believe the sensor was relocated beginning with the 2008 models. Thus, the 08 and 09 gauges read more accurately than previous years.
Ah ha, maybe this was why I didnt see any wires or anything coming out of the back of the gauge to re-locate. Well, it's still highly inaccurate and it drives me nuts just knowing there is something on my bike that doesn't work, even if I don't need it.
I have many years of riding/training so that I now know if it is hot or cold when I am on my bike. My body is now a highly accurate thermometer as defined by the US standards of weights and measures. Because of this, I was able to obtain a certificate which allowed me to remove the temp gauge and replace it with an oil temp gauge.
Please do not try this at home, I am a professional.
anyone have step by step directions for installing a oil temp gauge. hey pics would be nice thanks
I don't have pics but if you can change your oil you can do this mod.
I installed a gauge made by Roger McEwen. You can google it or install the HD one.
So for mine, I installed the sender into a spare oil pan hole. (Just remove the plug as described in Roger's instructions)
Pull the outer fairing off, remove the temp gauge, Install the oil temp gauge in the same spot. You will run a single wire from the gauge to the sending unit in the oil pan, and plug the four pin plug from the air temp gauge to the oil temp gauge.
Sorry I don't have pics and this was off the top of my head, but it really is a doable install for most people.
I relied heavily on my temperature guage. Last summer while riding the high mountains of Colorado it began to snow. When I checked the temperature guage and saw that it was almost 50 degrees, I was ecstatic. I was experiencing a weather phenom that probably has never happened before.
Recently decided to make a change on my '09 street glide and removed the temp guage and replaced it with the old compass that HD used to offer (found a new one on e-bay). After installation and calibration I went for a late afternoon ride just prior to sunset. With the sun in my eyes, I glanced down to see what direction I was headed. To my amazement I found that I was again experiencing a profound phenomenon. According to my new compass the sun was setting in the NE.
