Default 2008 VS. 2009 Gearing

I have a 2008 Ultra and have never like the feel of the clutch when taking off in first. I have had numerous Ultra Classics of past years and they were smoother. I was told the 08 gearing was "taller" than in the past and that caused the problem. It gets harder to take off smoothly as the bike heats up. I put AMSOIL in all 3 holes and it really made a big difference but you have to really work the clutch to take off smoothly. I actually had to 08 do the same thing. My dealer says it's quite common and they don't have a fix.

So now I see where they changed the gearing on the 09 touring models. The gearing is such that it appears it would correct the issue. Funning how they just did this on the touring models.

So my question is has anyone compared the 08 to an 09? Does the 09 start off smoother like 06 and previous years?

on the 09 they changed the back pulley 2 teeth bigger on 07 and 08 there are several aftermaket solutions one it the front puuley thats 2 teeth smaller the other is the front primary sprocket (evo industreis 30 tooth) there have been some drawbacks to both kits .speedo inacuacy and loss of 6th gear light there are some good older threads in here on this.

yes the 09 starts off smoother and it pulls a little better in 6th gear. the reason for dropping the gearing is the touring bikes are heavier and push more wind.

Had an 07 (with IDS added) and now an 09. Yes, the 09 is better. Just one of the MANY reasons I sold the 07 and moved to the 09.

Take a look at this site for some fixes. Particularly the 49 tooth clutch gear.

I sure would like to hear from someone who has actually cured their 07/08.

This is actually my 2nd 08. The first one had this problem and they could not or did not know how to fix it.

They let me trade for another one for less than 1k. I already had 6,000 miles so it was not too bad a deal but this one has the same problem. The AMSOIL really helps because the primary/clutch carpartment doesn't get as hot and I have learned to work the clutch better. It's still hard to switch between the Ultra and my 04 Dyna wide glide.

I may just have to go for an 09 but I don't want to shell out any more money without at least looking into a fix of some sort.

Anyway, please let me know if you own an 07/08 and have fixed the problem.

Thanks

I just had my indy put the Baker 30T Transmission sprocket on with the one tooth shorter belt. Only have about two hundred miles on it so far, but I like how the bike takes off and is easier to handle at low speeds now.

Don't have the impact on the MPG yet, but it has improved some on early tests. Will have a better idea of the impact on fuel mileage in a couple of weeks since I have a trip planned.

I can shift into 6th gear now at 60 MPH and the rpm drops from about 2800 in 5th down to about 2400 and can carry it there if things are flat. 2200 rpm in 6th is about the lowest I will go and that is running about 56 MPH on a calibrated speedometer.

Since I have the TTS Mastertune tuner, I was able to recalibrate my speedo, and the cruise and 6th gear light also work fine.

Can probably share some more information after my trip. 70MPH is now roughly 2800 RPM and 75 MPH is roughly 3000 rpm with this change.

Another thing, Baker also has a 31T pulley that gets the gearing almost identical to the 2009's and you don't have to change the belt with that one. It would change your RPM about 80 higher than what you current 08 setup is.

Here is a link to a gearing tool where you can put the different pulleys in and compare your RPM with the different gearing:

http://www.gearingcommander.com/

I put my 32T in as stock, the 31T as the second one then the 30T , then change your rpm ranges and you can see what speed and rpm you will be running in each gear.
