Throttle Play
I washed bikes this weekend. We had a beautiful couple of days here. On the Roadie I measured the amount of play. It is a little more than one half inch, not quite three quarters inch before it hits the gas. I can live with it, the problem is when I'm going low speed in parking lots and such. I find myself pulling in the clutch because I have trouble keeping a steady speed with the slack. I have some other bikes, and have riden a lot of different kinds for the past 43 years, not Harleys, and have not had this before. May just be a Harley thing. I don't think the bike has enough miles (7000) to need a new throttle cable. I bought it last fall with 4000 miles so I have not riden it that much. I may just need to get used to it. Anyway, thanks for all the feedback. I'm enjoying this Forum. Lots of great threads and good folks. Ride safe.
I wouldn't have thought I needed a cable until I had to take the switch cover apart for another reason and saw how badly frayed the rear one was. Like you, I didn't consider the play was excessive. I could see by operating the throttle with the cover off how that extra slop could hurt. As someone else said, all you yeally need is just enough so you know its hitting the stops when you roll off. Adjusting it is definitely not a big deal.
