Default fall away forks

Hey everyone, I raised my egc on a lift today and I had the forks turned to the left, once it was off the ground the forks straightened out. Is this normal?

Thanks Bill.

Hard to say because you still had hand controls and cables attached to the bars.

You didn't say what year so you at least have a clutch cable on the left and perhaps two throttle cables on the right if 07 or earlier. either or both cables can greatly influence the fall away indication due to their wanting to straighten out.

Yes, there is a spec for this on each particular year/model in the shop manuals. I forget what this phenomenon is actually called. Your bike probably calls for 2.5 "swings"; bike off the ground and LEVEL, turn bars to the stop, and let go...front end should swing way over the other way, then return, and make it half way back the other way again. (This would be a "2.5" spec.) Too much swing(s) makes for wobbles, while too few makes for weaves. Somebody will jump in and add something here....

If I'm not mistaken, the specs are for ready-to-ride trim...at least that's the way I read the manual.

Don't get too bent out of shape with the fall away. Even the best can't get it right. It sounds good in theory, but that's about as far as it goes. Just make sure you don't have any slop in your neck bearing, without over-tightening it.

Ready for ride trim is great perhaps for the few here who have not changed bars, cables and internal wiring.....................Fall away then becomes more of a judgement call and requires a very experience hand......just sayin

Ready to ride trim? I'm always looking for some trim that's ready to go for a ride. That definitely sounds better than screwing around with the so-called fallaway adjustments.

It's gonna take two people and you need to have access to the upper and lower neck bearing area enough to wrap you finger tips aroud each...........if you can get to that point, have someone clamp the front brake hard while he jerks the bike forward and aft....then the other person needs to feel the upper and lower head bearing areas to see if they feel any slop as his helper rocks the scoot front and back with front brake held fast.....Get the idea?
