Default advise on cams

I have a 03 classic which has 35000 miles on it. When I tear down to check and or replace the cam chain tensioners I was going to change out the cams to a little more preformance ones for mid-range increase, nothing radical. My local harley dealer informed me that after I have this done I will have to buy a power comander and have it installed, remap the motor, for the sum of 660.00 bucks. Yes its fuel injected, has had a stage one kit, with factory exhausted. Is this info correct, 1400.00 bucks is a little pricey for maby 20 hp. Any advice or info will be appreicated.

Technically speaking, you won't need to re-map if you install a PC. Especially one with autotune. It's something you can install yourself. As for your cams, not even going to ask which ones your thinking about. There's too many to choose from. Would think for an '03, you're going to have to change everything (cams, cam plate, tensioners, etc)?

20 HP from cams? If you could get 20 HP from cams then $1600 would be a bargain.

One of the HD dealers near me is doing an $855 special for 255's including install.

A DFO will work fine for enrichening your fuel circuit if you are just swapping cams or even doing a mild 95" build. They can be had for around 100 bucks if you shop around.

It sounds like the dealer is pushing a PC. I'm surprised he isn't pushing SE cams and an new SE download, which can be done. Sure, you won't be able to tune it like you can with a PC, DFO, and others, but the bike will run fine.

You do not need a commander, I put Andrews 37B mid range really pulls at 2500 and up, to get your through the gears replace the engine sprocket in the primary from 25 tooth to a 24.

I did not need to replace any comanders just a proper dyno and set up.

I love the power and ride (especially with a passenger), at the same time cut the pushrods and replace with SE adjustables.

If you are staying at 88" and just swapping out cams.............the Andrews 21 or Andrews 26 will be good choices for you. They are both bolt-in cams that work well with stock compression and 88".

You should get a PCIIIusb and put in a proper map for your combo.........that will make sure the bike is running safe and not lean. The best scenario would be to get it on a dyno and get a tune done.........that will give you the best power increases as well.

Don't let the dealer talk you into another download........they are a waste of $150 and do nothing for your bike.

I have a 00 electra glide Classic and went with SS510G gear drive cams and love how the bike performs, added a PCIII and true duals. Good luck which ever route you go. It will depend on your wallet.

Yeah, when you change cams you must modify the ECM that controls fuel delivery and ignition timing to the engine. The cam change allows the engine to move more air through it, so the ECM must be modified to add more fuel to that increased air.

My buddy has the same set-up you have and he rode my '04 EG (stock engine except for HQ-0034 cams, Rinehart TD's, and SE a/c) and was surprised at how much more powerful my bike was than his.

20+ hp and torque is about a 30+% increase over stock which you will definitely notice.

Let jamie @Fuel Moto set up a PCV for You. Tell him what you got in the motor and they will premap it. Simple plug and play from there. I run SE 257 cams in a 95" motor. Might be a little radical for you, depends on what U want .
