I would get one of those 'Battery Minders' and leave the battery connected.
They only put out about .5 A...when needed, to keep the battery topped off.
I hook mine up when the temps get down to the 30's. Around the middle of November and leave it until the weather warms up in the Spring. Usually around late March.
My battery is the original '05 and still does it's job.

Never heard it called a battery minder but you should get and use regularly, meaning daily, a battery tender. For 30 to 40 bones a great investment.

Taking out the battery won't hurt anything. I've heard not to leave them sitting on concrete.

Battery Tender kept my stock charged for 5 years over the winters. Depending on what your are doing to the bike you may want to disconnect for safety.

Get a quailty battery tender & leave it connected while you recover. It also wouldn't hurt to start up the bike & let it run for a couple of minutes once every week or two so your fuel doesn't sit there & go bad. If you get low on fuel put in a little more but don't fill it up all the way so you don't waste it.

Feel better!

Just how does running the engine keep the fuel from going bad?

Running the engine for a few minutes every week or two won't use much gas.

But it will hurt the motor. Condensation will form inside the motor.

Unless you are going for a ride long enough to burn off the condensation, leave it alone. Plug in the battery tender and forget about the bike for a while!

Don't run the engine. Put some fuel stabilizer in the tank and let it sit with the battery tender.
