Very, very common problem, I have stopped and helped a few along the roadside that lost the shifter and one lost the whole shaft. This is a normal service item that at a minimum, every oil change tighten all of the bolts on the entire shift assembly. If you strip the one at the tranny, now you have bigtime issues.
I had a service guy tell me recently that to change the shaft inside was billed at 6 hours. Apparently he had done that to his own bike.
As far as I know, there is no nylon in this area. It is the aluminum primary case and the steel shaft. If anyone can prove me wrong, I apologize. Otherwise, I still believe in this part..
There are two brass bushings in the aluminum case - you can see them with the shaft removed. Apparently you can replace these bushings when they become worn.
BTW, on my 07, I drilled the case and installed a zerk. Later I installed a chrome inner primary case and that's when I found the Pingel part and installed it. Worked so well that I had to have one on my 11.
The shifter on my '08 RKC flops around because of the worn bushings even though I took the shaft out to clean and grease it twice a year. I should have done the zerk mod when I bought the bike.
The same thing happened to me on our way back from Canada. No amount of tightening would make the shift lever hold. We went to the local harley dealer and they replaced the lever as a warranty repair. The mechanic said that the lever is actually aluminum and the bar is cold rolled steel so the lever wears out or strips first.
