One thing I did find was that the transmission lever was a #8x1.00 fine metric thread.
interesting. Is that the norm? Anyone else have to use Metric sized fastener? I'm doing my 2009 Road King tomorrow and this would be great info to have before I head out to get what I need.

Mine was 5/16x24 not metric. If not sure take the old connection piece with you when you get the new parts to check threads
Maybe that was it I was using 5/16 -18 coarse thread bolt. That wouldn't work so I took the end piece to a hardware store and matched up what worked. I don't think there was a 5/16-24 bolt/ nut at this one. Anyway in there tight and sound now.
I just need to find something else to use a brass acorn nut on so I can have 2 brass nuts.
The difference between the metric and SAE in that size is so little that at that thread depth you'll probably never know the difference. .3125 vs .3149 OD, and .0417 vs .0394 thread pitch.
i thought i would take some pics to show how easy it is to do this mod. replacing the stock shift linkage is cheap insurance and is super simple to do.
first thing you need are all the parts:
2 heim joints (got mine from ebay, 5/16x24 rh, less than $5.00 shipped)
1 8 x 25mm bolt (you don't have to use metric, but the local store didn't have sae with the corresponding acorn nut)
1 acorn nut
1 5/16 x 24 x 3/4 bolt
all told, less than $8.00 in parts, takes about 10 minutes to do.....
don't look at how dirty the bike is, haven't cleaned it up since riding in the rain last time......
anyway, super easy, and i swear it makes it feel like it shifts more positive now (could be in my mind, but i don't think so) and won't leave you stranded out in bfe..... also notice that you put the acorn nut on the outside, so the hex head bolt is behind the shift lever, looks better that way.
if you find that the shift pedal is too low, take the whole thing off the spline and move it one tooth, that will give you more room.
Will these specs work? Mainly, the thread length is what I'm not sure of. Rod End Specs
Economy female steel two piece rod end.
Thread Size: 5/16-24 RH
Ball Bore: .3125
Ball Width: .437
Centerline Length: 1.375
Thread Length: .687
Load Capacity: 5,110
