FYI,the " RIGHT-STUFF " mfg'd by Permatex is a great alternative oil & heat resistant RTV type sealer too.

It's a much faster curing RTV type sealer thats specifically designed to seal oil & handle the heat generated in that area of an HD motor with no problems.

It's and is avail in black to match the HD's engine case too so you would hardly notice it.

Seals em right up.. Got this idea from a friend who got it from a mechanic that works at Gail's HD in Missouri.
This is very effective. Thumbs up.

Can I apply the sealer to the outside only or do I need to open it up and apply to the inside?

outside. you would have to disassemble the primary to get at it from the inside.

Not sure how others did it but there is almost no room to see or work so I used Qtips to get up in there to clean it.

old thread but one with some good information!!! just did this repair Friday and am happy to report no more leak!! my stator works just fine so why replace it when a can of carb cleaner and a tube of RVT will fix it
this forum has some priceless info on it from time to time!!

Have same year bike. 2011 limited. Same fix. Started leaking at 20k. 3 years ago. Stator was fine but the leak drove me nuts. I used a forceps. Grapped the rubber, stretched it out. Cleaned with brake cleaner. Used the black RTV. Not a problem since. Last week I had my compensator upgraded. Had them throw a stator in while he was in there. It does work and it does last. At 45k now.But now I start over. Good luck
