I am about to do my 1000 mile service. How many pumps should I use?I don't want to fill it and then have it running out all over.
If you follow the service manual, you will end up injecting almost the entire tube of grease before you see it coming out of the top and bottom of the steering head. I used the HD grease on my previous Ultra and was continually wiping grease off of everything, so I just wrapped a black sock around the steering head. When I traded it in on a '12' RKC, they wanted to know what the sock was for. I used the Red 'n' Tacky #2 on the RKC, and so far no drips, and no sock.
Besides the "recommended" HD grease, pumping it clear full till it pushed out the top and bottom was one of my big mistakes, but can I get away with filling/purging it with red n tacky via the zerk, or do I need to pull the tree and clean it all up and start over.
On my 89 that I previously used that HD crap in I just pushed it out with the other grease via the zerk. It was pretty messy after pushing it through but it was a one time mess versus the constant one with the thin grease.
Don't forget a couple of shots on your zerks in the shift linkage and rear brake.
Im on my phone using the mobile app and it doesnt show what you ride but most bikes Ive seen dont have zerks on either of the areas your mentioning....i take it you put those in yourself?
I leave a grease tube Im considering using on my workbench for a week or so before I decide to use it on my steed, in this oven I live in if I dont see **** around the tube after that time frame thats what I will use.....multi-purpose bearing grease is what I use (its blue and made to stay on bearings). Do I see anything at the bottom of my mount when I inspect it, yes but its not runny and is just gravity doing its thing.

The older harleys had them, I was suprised to see my 06 didn't have one for the shifter or the brake pedal.
