Check e-bay. You don't need much of laptop for this. Doesn't take much computer power to change a few numbers.
But make sure it has the right kind of connections. From the catalog pictures, it doesn't look like it has a USB connection. It looks like a serial connection??? Of course, for about $30 you can get a USB/Serial adaptor.
Use one of them USB storage thingies. You will most likely need to find a USB gender changer or extension cable. You can then load and run the PCIII program from the USB device. I think that you will also need to have the bike running or power up the unit with a 9V battery. I have not actually tried it, but It should work in theory. Good luck.
You need either a home PC or a laptop. Laptop is better because you can ride the bike with the computer in a bag and record data. Others have purchased real long serial cables and run them from the house to the garage.
home computer works great!!! You will have a hard time finding a laptop with a serial port these days. you just need to buy a longer cable to reach the garage or outside. They have cables as long as 50 feet. 2 or 3 of those should work if you need it that long. i only needed 25 feet myself.
Got a SERT and laptop, put in Data Mode, disabled standby mode on the laptop (so I could close the lid and keep collecting data)
Problem (happened twice) is that the Data Collection stops - get PCM Sync Failed
What can be causing this error?
I can run in idle and collect data all day - just gets this error when I try and drive the bike.
Try setting the baud rate for the com port to 9600. If that doesn't help, then lower the frame rate of the data mode to 10 fps. Could also be your cable. I picked up a USB to Serial cable at Best Buy for $38 and it works fine.
