Hey,
Second time in 5 years, lost clutch adjustment, went to adjust, basket wobbles on shaft, was 300 miles from home, impacted it on to get home, made it, thinking of upgrade or if someone can tell me how to prevent this?
Thanx
You either have a broken or cracked hub or bad hub bearing. If you tightened it up to take out wobble, it's probably the first one. Need to take the hub off and see whats going on.
I've run that type hub/clutch for 160k mikes so... to me there is no "upgrade" though many have "converted" but gained nothing more tools in the box to work on it and wondering why they can't get the adjustment right.
I had a broken clutch hub finger and replaced it with an aftermarket clutch hub many years ago and still going with no problems. For me, cheapest was to replace with a better clutch hub. That would be an upgrade from stock. Won't really know until you open her up.
Looks like you were on the original post. Do you already have an aftermarket clutch hub?
The later gearbox also gets you the vastly better oil sump beneath the the transmissions which is a common reason FXRs are converted. Losing the annoying stock oil bag improves maintenance access and if you do as I did and make a removable crossmember/skid plate (my local roads are not well maintained) you can drop the pan without pulling the gearbox. You also gain the much more powerful Denso OSGR Light Duty starter used in millions of cars and trucks so fixable cheep almost anywhere. I have zero problem adjusting either.
An easy way to get a better hub is use the steel core (including tower) aftermarket clutch hub but I've no use for tapered shafts (the sole reason for HD not going with splines was they were too cheap to machine the shafts and broach clutch hubs, and that is mighty cheap).
The FXR Cheat Sheet group on Fecesbook is worth a dummy account since FXRs and Evo bagger drivetrains interchange. Those not wanting the oil bag can just bolt in a later bagger five speed and set the oil pan aside, but since bagger controls don't conflict with the swap I'd run it too. I've not checked bagger frames for crossmember location since I don't own one but replacing my FXR crossmember was easy without stripping the bike and all the (simple) welding can be done properly from the bottom because I did.
You have many options. If you ever want to go large displacement Delkron are alive again and make a very stout inner primary cover and (FXR style, no sump) beastly trans case. Contact Vince direct since they sell enough by word of mouth and Ebay is something of a placeholder.
Tightening the clutch hub on a taper shaft with a rattle gun can crack the hub where the taper is. Check for cracks...it might have been a previous wrench or owner who did it.

Probably!!!!
I detest that particular Clutch set-up. Have One left...but, Luckily I have a Shovelhead Mainshaft (yes 5-speed) and Clutch in Stock...waiting!

I purchased the upgraded steel basket and installed with a Zippers reinforcement ring. My stock aluminum one had a split where it meets the taper and one of the posts was cracked as well.
Took apart, examined, found hub not sitting flush to shaft,Andrews main, aftermarket hub..lapped hub to shaft, nice fit now so I'll see..thanks for the ideas..
