my 1996 flhri runs great when you start it and run about ten miles then it shuts off like the switch was turn off. after cycling the switch a number of times it well run for hours. any help well be appreciated.
when the bike shuts down the lights still are on, the motor will spin over but there is no spark to the plugs. if i pull the battery leads off for a minite and reconnet them it will start . and yes i am good with a voltmeter.
I suck with EFI ( I just bought my first non-carb bike this week).
I'm guessing that:
you are loosing power to:
Fuel pump
ECU ( or fault- or sensor input...you have crank barometric and temperature sensors)
short in stop/run switch or wiring. ( do any handlebar control changes lately...pinched wires?)
does this bike have the bank angle sensor? early models had a loose mounting brace which would allow the BAS to turn off the bike while running.
spark/no spark- careful testing as the system is easy to burn out. You have cranked motor with plug tip visible- and threads grounded- no spark?
When cranking do you smell raw fuel in tailpipes ( I think the old system is "dumb" enough to keep spraying is there is no fire--- that would let us know if fuel pump/ECU/injectors are working.
The ignition switches in many bikes are a weak point especially if extra lighting or other load is run through the switch. ( I have all my lighting on the 1995 run through a relay system).
If the switch is burnt out- I would not expect the lights to light or the starter to run...so I don't think it is that.
Temperature seem to have any effect?
there are 2 relays under the right side cover, 1 for starter, 1 for ECU. check connections are clean and tight, you could even swap them side by side for testing

Reason: clarity
i took my road king to a dealer to have it hooked up to the h/d computer the tech said that there was no code showing up and couldn,t help me. i went to leave and the bike wouldn't start. the tech rehook the machine back up, and a code 16 came up which came up low voltage to the ecm . and to replace battery, witch they did and the bike started. after paying 140.00 for the new battery i was on my way home and stop to full up, after filling up went to leave bike would not start, after cycling the switch a few times it started. any input will be helpful.
Check the wires from your handlebar switches. By chance have you done any changes in the area of your handlebars? You might have a problem with the wire from your on/off switch. That would account for the motor shutting off while everything else maintains power.
Otherwise, I'll pass along the absolute best troubleshooting advice I ever received: start with the last thing you changed, no matter how unrelated it might seem to be.
