Go ahead and chip it, get it over with and the rest of the build will be less stressful

Quick pic of the riser cover and accessory light I'll be using. The Cannonball starter is designed NOT to start in any gear other than neutral. Pulled this light assembly out of my stash and had the brackets rechromed. Added a 12 v bulb and new wire. I believe it is a Harley accessory, but if not, it's still cool. Using a '59 'n up top tranny cover with the neutral switch (Sorry about the humongous pic).

??????????????? for John

1. Is this the correct starter relay?

It is stamped D2AF-11450-AA.

2. How do I know which post with the heavy duty wire goes to the + side of the battery and which post is attached to the heavy duty wire from the starter motor

3. I assume that the smaller studs connect in the same way as they do on the wiring diagram provided by wwag.com.

a. Heavy duty wire to battery positive. Small stud next to it goes to ignition switch.

b. Heavy duty wire from starter motor. Small stud next to it goes to starter button switch.

Ford solenoids are very standard. I even use one in my plane.
Battery terminal is the left large, starter is the right large.
Starter switch left small.
Must ground through the bracket.
To back up a little, I assume you are adding electric start to the pan so are not staying period correct?
I would use a much better relay than that and doesn't use so much current. That way it is much easier on the switch.
I use a
Amazon Amazon
on my shovel.
On this one you need a ground to the second small terminal.
If you don't like that one at least use the flat style Ford relay
Amazon Amazon
Same relay as the one you have but better mounting.
Ford uses these heavy relays as they are the solenoid and have the entire starter amp draw through this relay.
On Harleys we only energize the true solenoid. No starter current through these on a Harley.

Mark SG/ hellonewman... what I am doing is mimicking the solenoid that is in the diagram. So while it is referred to as "relay" in the diagram, it is actually a solenoid

...and you are correct Mark, I am adding the cannonball e-start to this project.

Early on (#10-16) I posted upon the starter unit. John stated he used the heavy duty Ford component. Just clarifying that I am getting the correct one.

Technically, it is a relay.. A solenoid does mechanical action like pushing a starter gear into a ring gear..

Either one will work. As mentioned, its only a relay, just a heavy duty one that carries a lot of current. You want the starter button to trigger the ford relay through that small terminal connecting the two large ones completing the circuit to the starter.

The smaller relay is from a newer car such as an 89 Thunderbird or Mustang vs the older big clunker that might be harder to hide.
