Nice work. I've been thinking about doing something like that myself. Thanks for getting me motivated.

Thanks for the garage door opener idea! i kind of spun off of it a little. you know the trip reset button on the left side of the speedo? i bought a new switch from my local stealer, $14.00, and a universal remote,$ 25.00. drilled the right side of my speedo cluster and mounted the new button soldered it into the universal remote, wrapped that up real good with some foam(no rattle) and stuffed it under the speedo. looks factory. i love it, real proud of that little mod too. thanks guys! will post pics asap.

ITSBLU,
Good job, but where's the pics?
Where did you get the opener? I have been looking to do the same thing.
I already have the switch ready to go. But need another opener to do it with.
The wife would get a bit more than slightly annoyed if I swiped the one we have in her car for my bike.

Default new garage door opener mod

took me a while to figure out how to add a pic but i think i finally got it.
picked up the universal remote on sale at sears.its got two clickers and if you decide to use that one, i recommend programming and using the one on the right, or the one that it shows as number 2. reason being, if you're not the greatest at soldering, and i'm not, the one on the right doesn't have anything else around it to accidentally solder. like i did the first three times i tried to solder it.

ITSBLU,
Thanks for the tip on where to get the remote.
I'll have to check it out ASAP now that its warming up enough to get the bike out of the garage.
The soldering shouldn't be a problem, I have been doing it for so long I can do it in my sleep.

ITSBLU,
The garage door opener mod. sounds like a great idea. I'd love to do this myself, but I may have a few questions down the road if you don't mind. I've got an extra remote to use but I'm not exactly sure how to solder it. I'll open it and see if I can figure it out.

What!!!! You still let her park in the garage???

Since getting my second bike, the garage is for my truck and my bikes. Her car is outside....and no, I don't scrape the ice for her. Yea, she's a little annoyed, but c'mon, we need to get our priorities straight.

Default RE: DIY cheap mods

Found one today for turning the headlight off during start. Cost me $15 for the relay and socket. The way this works is the relay turns off the headlight when the start button is pushed and it comes back on after the start button is released.
  1. Tap into Pin 6 of Connector 22. This is the Black/red wire.
  2. Take the "tapped wire" and connect to terminal 86 of relay.
  3. Connect terminal 85 of relay to ground.
  4. Cut wire from Pin 2 of Connector 24. The yellow wire from the headlight.
  5. Connect end of cut wire that goes back to Connector 24, to terminal 38 of the relay.
  6. Connect end of cut wire that goes to headlamp, to terminal 87a of relay.
  7. Nothing should be connected to terminal 87 of the relay.
It won't turn off the hi-beam (or any other light), just the low-beam. I like having at least the low-beam go off for starting.

It is a 5 pin. 87 is where it trips to when it's energized(that happens when the starter button is pushed) and turns off the low-beam. Then when it's not energized anymore(release of starter button) it trips back to 87a and completes the low-beam circuit.

My relay was pretty well marked so I just made sure it had all those #s on it.

I bought my 5 position pre-wired relay and socket at an auto alarm place.
