Exhaust options~expertise needed
That being said, take a look on craigslist or ebay. You can find all kinds of barely used exhaust systems for pretty cheap. I bought a set of Vance and Hines Big Radius 2-2 pipes a few weeks ago from an ad on craigslist for $375.
we bought python 3 slipons (brand new, shipped in just for us) for the 08 sportster - nicest sound I heard of the various slipons we heard on simiilar bikes. about $350 installed at the local indie shop and gave him the stock pieces (no idea what he's going to do with them) in exchange of an oil change in the future.
No doubt you can do better in sound, performance and price than what you've been shown so far.
as for the lean issues from changing out the muffler... let me preface this by stating that I am NOT an engineer, mechanic, nor areo or fluid dynamicist.... but based on the research I did before we made the decision to do the slipon replacement. it will outflow better. so there's less back pressure. that primarily lowers torque a smidge. the lean condition really shows up if you change intake characteristics and don't make an adjustment to the fuel delivery. if you put a high flow AC on, you're COULD POTENTIALLY allow more air in than the jets (carb) or fuel pump and injectors (injected) can compensate for, so you by definition will be running lean. I talked to about 40 guys who have all had bikes for 15 plus years (including 3 indie wrenches) and got the same answer almost universally - changing the exhaust system will NOT hurt your motor. changing the muffler (as opposed to your headers) will have almost no impact on your performance or longevity... but it will make your bike sound badder and thereby you will be badder...
