sure thing- if you do end up wanting to throw on some 3M vinyl just PM me and I'll give you some more tips, mostly things on how to wrap odd curves, tight corners etc.

Just got the Powervision PV-2 in the mail today, brand new in box and unopened, and has a newer unit build date. $400 shipped from a midwest HD dealership, gotta love them ebay deals. Although now I gotta call Dynojet because there is no pre-made tune listed for the VH Big Radius 2-2 pipes. Pretty funny considering it's one of the most purchased sets of pipes for Softails...

Default Fat Mini-Ape kit???

Has anyone here used the Fat Mini-Ape kit from HD? Was about to order a set of 17" Evil Apes from Carlini when I got to throw a leg over the Breakout at the Harley pavilion in Daytona last month during bike week. That bike had the Fat Mini-ape kit on it. Bars were a little lower than I'm looking for, but my biggest issue is I'm finding it hard to believe they're only 12". As everyone tells me the bars from Carlini are taller than they say so now I'm stuck.

Can any tell me what the Fat Mini-Apes really measure? Can anyone tell me what a set of 17" Evil apes really measure?

Help!!!

Figured I could ask here instead of polluting the Softail section with another thread..

Looking for a second Harley, I have a '14 Iron that I put a 1250 Hammer kit on. Don't want a Touring bike at all, but something a little bigger would be cool. I'd be keeping the Sporty, she's a blast to ride, just looking for a second bike with a little different style.

Are there things about the Breakout you don't like? The Breakout is really the only Softail that has my eye, I love the style. The lean angle is the only thing I'm concerned about.. how big of an issue is that? It seems significantly less than most Harley's, is it that dramatic on the road?

Thanks guys

You know that is an excellent question. the Breakout is a fantastic bike- But, it does have some specific deficiencies off the showroom floor which make it less capable than it should be.

Specifically:

1. Front fork suspension is too soft and dives too much. it also compresses too easily under load, e.g. cornering, and reduces your clearances. it also makes for some religious experiences if you hit bumps in the corner. It also makes fast braking less effective. Easy fix- Replace the fork springs with Race Tech and put in some Ricor or Race Tech dampers. Huge, massive improvement. $400 range - See sticky in Softail section.

2. Stock dunlop tires are terrible. They don't grip very well and the face profiles are too flat. makes for floppy slow turns and more effort to initiate any turn, and not a good stable feeling in the turns. The back tire breaks loose sooner than it should. Fix: put on a set of Pirelli Night Dragons. Front will change to a 120/70/21 instead of the too-wide 130. $400 range

3. Also remove the footpeg feelers, they unscrew. these drag way too early in corners. $free

You do these three things, your BO will be a very fun bike to ride even when pushing it, will turn very well and it will stop a lot sooner / more safely. Everything else you do to it on top of that will be gravy.

I was actually contemplating getting rid of my BO before I did these upgrades as a "last effort" - I'm glad I did. I'll never sell it now.

I was worried about that too, but after taking the feelers off, it's not much of an issue for me. However, I ride pretty conservatively. (but still scrape the pegs sometimes/rarely)

I know of one person that bought the BO - Sunk tonnes of $$ into it, then sold it because of cornering.

If you like to ride aggressively and are not willing to do all the stuff LA Dog mentions, you should think twice. Just go rent one for the day and find out for sure.

That is my recommendation as well. For me, this is an amazing looking cruiser and excellent for enjoying the sunshine and ripping up some straight sections. Mine is slammed to the bump stop around town, so it has zero cornering ability, but it doesn't bother me at all. Granted, I do jack the suspension up when hitting the twisties. Even then though, it certainly is no crotch rocket or even decent lean in cruiser. However, it's no worse than most bikes with boards that I've ridden over the years.

Really, only you can answer whether or not it fits your needs and desires. If you want to look like a bad a$$, this is the bike for you. If you want to ride like Rossi, no amount of tweaks are going to get you there (of course neither is a Harley for that matter).

Yeh- really good perspectives from Stonecliff and Jtaliani. Renting one is a good way to check it out at not much expense. I don't think anyone here is under the illusion that they want their FXS HD to handle more like a sport bike- Most of us have already been there done that. I too was going to sell it because of cornering and braking, but now it is remaining a permanent part of the bike stable.

The upgrades i suggested will only get rid of a magnified issue that (IMO) should not be there, and it's certainly not present as much on other FXS bikes- but don't expect more from these upgrades than just getting the bike back to riding like it should. For about the cost of a set of pipes it's hands down a worthwhile upgrade for the BO. My main reason for doing it was safety especially with the wife on the back, this was not a "performance minded" mod. The nice thing is though, that is about the only negative thing I can find about the Breakout. I absolutely love everything else about the bike.
