Default replacing my throttle/idle cable 2009 sportster 883

Hi so Ive gone to replace my cables, got them off no problem, I cut the 2 zip ties under the tank that hold the cables in, now it seems I really am gonna have a tough time putting those zip ties back, I've loosened up the gas tank it pivots up, loosened up my key so I have play it still seems difficult, was I not supposed to cut those zip ties? it seemed like I couldnt pull the cables & housing through the zip ties?

REMOVE the tank for access. Cut the zip ties. Route new cables and secure with zip ties. Kinda no-brainer, if ya cut em off, replace em.

On the other side there is the other cable tidy. That is where there is a screw. Take that out and you will be able to gain access to thread new zip ties in.

Tank has to come off first:-
Remove fuel pump fuse and try and start the engine. That will take the pressure out of the fuel pump.
Remove fuel pipe at quick disconnect at tank.
Pull off connector for fuel pump. There is a clip holding the cable. With a small screwdriver you can push in the barb and pull out one side.
Pull off vent hose.
Now you can take out the 2 screws and remove the tank.

Yes you didn't need to cut the ties. It is possible to thread new cables through them.

thank you guys, I was able to just lift the tank up and let it rest on the bolt instead of removing it, I removed the screw holding the cable shroud together from other side and was able to get my hand in there to replace the zip ties... the bike is working great now!

Can I leap on this thread? I've a 2009 XL1200 Low and I've been doing a service on it. I notice that the throttle doesn't quite open fully and have been adjusting the cables. Problem is that at full adjustment of the open cable (i.e. making the outer cable as long as possible) the cam still isn't against its stop. I guess I need a new cable? But will the new one be any different?
While I'm picking brains. Is there such a thing as a duet stage twist grip? Ideally I'd like it to be slow acting for the first stage then quicker as it opens further. I'm finding it difficult to ride slowly and smoothly. This may be because the engine need s a tune.......

You may have your return cable adjusted too tight. Loosen it and see if you can get full throttle. You likely need to adjust the pull cable. then adjust the return cable. You want to be able to twist the throttle slightly before you actually move the butterfly in the TB.

If the throttle cables are out of whack, that can lead to being snatchy on the throttle. Could also be a tune-up or tune issue.

I do not know if there is a throttle grip for HD that has 2 ratios. BMW used a gear setup that was slow to open at first, then became quicker. Hopefully someone has an answer for you.

i wouldnt know about that duel stage but if its a sportster, and you havent changed anything really with the throtte its probably the cable, mine i could twist the throttle the wrong way a little there was alot of play, when i took the cables off the rusted cable(idle cable) snapped right in half....dont cut the zip ties if you dont have to use a flat plier or something and with both cables freed up it may be possible

I adjusted it as per the manual, by slackening off the return cable before adjusting the pull cable. To be honest I’ll probably never miss those last couple of horses but I’d like it to be right.

If you did adjust them correctly per the book. Then is likely time to replace them.
