hey my brake light went out so i replaced the bulb. when that didnt work. I replaced the entire wiring harness under the brake light cover. now both filaments on the bulb are lit, no change when i depress either brake lever. i tried flipping the bulb over but same deal. any ideas on where i should be looking and what for?
check your front brake switch. i dont know about the new design but my 1988 has a tiny pin sticking out from the kill switch/starter button housing, and a small extention on the hinge end of the brake lever pushes it in and out to activate the light.
it only works if the brake lever perch and the control housing and pressed up right into each other on the handlebar. if one comes loose and moves at least a 1/8 inch away the switch is stuck in ON and my brake light wont turn off.
well it was the front brake light switch. dont know why the lever decided it didnt want to depress the switch anymore. i tried taking the whole assembly off and properly repositioning it, but still didn't work. i fixed it by glueing a thin piece of foam to the levers contact point with the switch. nothing like jerryrigging.

this is why a lot of shops cut it out completely and run the rear. its real finicky.
something inside mine is corroded and i have to space the brake lever perch from the hand console about 1/8th an inch or else the light does not activate until the brake is pulled in amost all the way. now it turns on at a light tap and before the brakes start braking
it might be jamed from vibration inside the button console, if it stops working again or acts weird later it means it came loose again.
Wonder if that little brass piece that holds the switch forward was still in there. It floats, depending on tension to keep it in place. If you had the switch apart, it could easily drop out and never been seen again... strange design.
