Fairing screws?
I may have buggered up a brass thread on my fairing. Can these be changed out? It looks like they're pressed in.
I chased the thread for now but I know this will come to bite me in the a$$ later.

You might check a marine fastener place. They have what I call grip serts that are put in with a tool that they thread onto and you squeeze the handle which expands the insert. Then just untread the tool. There are also brass treaded inserts used to wood working that would probibly do the same thing.

Go to your'e dealer and get part #16585-96 fairing insert. These thread in instead of push in. When you get one you will notice there is a slot in one end. Don't try winding it in with a screwdriver as you will snap the end off. The end with the slot is for starting in the fairing, then use one of your'e fairing screws with a nut on it for a spacer so you don't bottom it on the inner fairing when you wind it in. This is a simple, excellent repair and is what should have been installed right from the factory.

Add to this: The original hole(s) has to be drilled out to accept the HD replacement threaded inserts, or cracking of the plastic boss can happen. I think it is 8mm, but am not sure, it was addressed somewhere else. Drop over to the Electraglide Garage, and do a search on fairing inserts, it will give all the the info you need.Electraglide Garage

Inserts went in fine for me, first I have heard of drilling the fairing. The tech at the harley shop didn't mention anything and they put lots in as this is a very common problem. I think its very important to start the slotted end first as it lets the insert compress slightly as you start it so it doesn't crack the fairing.
